The Registered Nurse-Acute is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

**DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION**
5 North is a 28-bed adult inpatient care unit in the department of Medical/Surgical Services. The unit provides 24-hour inpatient care to patients admitted with Neuro-Medical and Neuro-Surgical care needs as well as patients from Trauma Services.
**Services Provided/Patient Conditions:**
The more frequent patient populations specific to 5 North include:
Neuro-medical patients: ischemic/hemorrhagic CVA, TIA, cerebral aneurysm, encephalopathy, brain tumor
Neuro-surgical patients: thrombectomy, aneurysm coiling/clipping, tumor resections, craniotomies, deep brain stimulator placement, VP shunt placement/revision
Seizure disorders
Trauma: blunt force, penetrating injuries, large bone fractures, surgical repair, TBI, etc.
In addition, the following patient types may be admitted to 5 North:
Baclofen pump placement/revision for treatment of spasticity
Chronic ventilator dependent patients
Other neurological disorders (for ex: Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barré, Myasthenia Gravis)
Surgical procedures involving the cervical or thoracic spine
Patients with medical diagnoses
**Staffing Mix:**
Patient care is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN's and CNA's. Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management. Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift or day to day due to acuity of patients and availability of resources.
**Patient Population:**
The age groups treated on 5 North range from:
1% adolescent
10% early adult
24% middle adult
30% late adult
35% geriatric
The predominant age range of the patients on 5 North is greater than 65 years of age. The least frequent age group is within the adolescent category. Patients from various cultures seen on 5 North including Native American, Hmong, Hispanic and Amish/Mennonite.
