Position: Director Of Transportation

Responsible To: Superintendent(s)

Type Position: Non- Exempt

Qualifications:

  1. Ability to supervise, organize, direct others
  2. Thorough knowledge of transportation function, rules and regulations
  3. Excellent organizational skills
  4. Excellent communication skills; ability to work with students, faculty, staff and general public in a diplomatic, friendly and efficient manner
  5. Must hold CDL with Passenger, and School Bus Endorsements
  6. Required Background clearance results must be satisfactory to the District
  7. Ability to pass required annual physical and drug test as required by state law and district policy
  8. Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug tests

Primary Responsibilities:

To administer and oversee the overall transportation operation of the District. Including organization of routes and reports, so as to provide safe and efficient transportation to and from school and to and from approved extra-curricular/non route activities.

Term Of Employment:

12 month position

Compensation:

In accordance with the district approved payscale

Paid Time Off (PTO):

In accordance with the district approved paid holidays and vacation policy

Evaluation:

Evaluated annually by Superintendent(s) as designated by the Board of Education

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reviews and assigns routes and stops.
  2. Assumes responsibility for obtaining qualified drivers.
  3. Receives complaints/concerns of patrons concerning transportation function; investigates concerns directly or causes such investigation by other staff members; responds to patrons or causes response to occur by other staff members when deemed appropriate.
  4. Oversees the bid process in the purchasing of buses or other transportation equipment and supplies.
  5. Accurately completes and submits required reports to DESE Transportation Section, including but not limited to Depreciation Schedules, Route Approval Forms, Application for Transportation Aid and Accident Reports.
  6. Provides a system to keep accurate records of student count, mileage, etc.
  7. Ensures that all transportation rules and regulations are followed.
  8. Recommends to the Superintendent of Operations and/or Transportation whether to operate or close school during inclement weather. Will assist in checking roads and assist in making this decision.
  9. Oversees transportation budget, including organized paperwork and good bookkeeping of spending.
  10. Assists in evaluation of transportation employees.
  11. Ensures coverage for drivers who are absent.
  12. Ensures clean and safe equipment.
  13. Ensures adequate materials and supplies for buses, parking lots and school vehicles, mowers and tractors.
  14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Supervisory Duties:

Will be assigned various supervisory positions as deemed necessary. Such as but not limited to training new drivers and being a certified trainer

Skills and Abilities

Must be willing to learn and comply with district initiatives that involve technical and program skills. Such as but not limited to Student Information Systems (SIS) and online curriculums, as well as proficiency with computer based communication expectations.

Attendance:

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Must follow district policy on employee absences.

Computation:

Ability to define problems, and draw valid conclusions. Demonstrate computer competency.

Hearing:

Must be able to hear a conversation in a noisy environment .

Language:

An individual who holds this position must have the ability to:

  • Communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English.
  • Read, analyze and interpret administrative correspondence and directives as well as Board policy and handbooks.
  • Keep student information confidential according to FERPA when required by law, except for from the building administration

Physical Demands:

An individual who holds this position must be capable of riding and driving a bus. Frequently move in and around buildings and grounds, attend meetings and supervise designated areas. Frequently required to stand, walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

Technology:

Basic computer skills, ability to learn new programs quickly, and manage the following: Basic Computer Word Processing, and Google Suites.

The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however, the individual who holds this position will occasionally be required to be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees.

The individual who holds this position is occasionally, as designated in their contract, required to work irregular or extended hours for specific school events, such as school programs or conferences.
