Marquette University Press Business Manager position
Operations and Administrative Services
This role is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Marquette University Press, a scholarly book publishing house specializing in the humanities. Duties include production, sales, distribution, and inventory management of titles as well as overseeing the warehouse and sales fulfillment center; maintain responsibility for the accounting functions including budget planning, receivables and payables; be the primary contact for relationships and manage social media sites.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Oversee the production and printing of books, including eBook work, print-on-demand work, reprints. Receive and distribute books and track sales. Create and manage metadata (providing detailed information about each work to be read by algorithms).
2. Complete all financial reporting and budget responsibilities including but not limited to: accounts receivable and payables, reconciling all financial transactions, completing needed financial reporting and keeping and maintaining inventory data.
3. Manage relationships with authors, agents, buyers, vendors, and reviewers. Carry out permissions research and royalty work.
4. Work with fulfillment house on book orders, problem solving, and record keeping.
5. Oversee and implement related advertising and marketing. Create and maintain social media platforms. Develop and maintain website. Create and manage mailing lists. Handle advertising and promotions; coordinate and implement book displays for conferences.
6. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Associate degree or equivalent in business, accounting, or related field.
A minimum of 3 years comparable experience.
Knowledge of MAC operating system, Microsoft professional software including Excel, Word, Outlook; experience with Adobe Pro.
Basic understanding of social media.
Good attention to detail.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and work independently.
Strong analytic capability and math aptitude.
Ability to problem solve under pressure.
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
Familiarity with QuickBooks, Adobe products such as InDesign and Photoshop.
Basic IT skills (ability to navigate multiple software applications and web platforms).
Supervisory experience preferred.
Background in publishing.
