Rescue Ranch Technician Advocate
Reports To: Executive Director
Classification: Hourly, non-exempt.
Job Summary
The Ranch Technician Advocate is directly employed by Marley’s Mutts® to perform all duties related to the care and well-being of animals residing at the Marley’s Mutts Rescue Ranch. The
Advocate must be self-motivated, and able to respond quickly and with quick reflexes to various situations that occur in the animal industry.
Schedule
Part-time position with regularly scheduled shifts on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Additional hours and shifts may be available to provide coverage for vacations, events, transports, or other operational needs. Candidates should be flexible and willing to work occasional additional days as needed.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities include comprehensive daily animal care as follows:
- General handling, training, exercising, and enriching of the animals (with adequate instruction), which includes learning about individual dogs and their routines/uniqueness
- Separating and controlling fighting animals
- Segregating and isolating animals, as necessary
- Monitoring animals and observing them for unusual physical and behavioral conditions
- Performing a daily count of animals and reporting any conditions or inconsistencies to
Supervision and/or Executive Director
- Completing various records and forms such as kennel cards, animal bios, activities sheets, behavioral issues, food sensitivities, personality sensitivities
- Assisting with vaccination and minor medical treatments
- Bathing and grooming, including trimming nails, cleaning ears, expressing anal glands, and brushing teeth (as trained)
- Preparing food, feeding, and providing water
- Washing food/water bowls
- Laundry
Additional duties may include:
- Cleaning and disinfecting indoor/outdoor kennels, exercise yards, and cat house/cages
- Sweeping/mopping floors
- Picking up fecal material
- Washing and sweeping debris from walls, beds, and dog run areas
- Record keeping on animal disposition
- Showing animals to the public and providing information relating to possible fostering and/or adopting
- Assisting with fostering or adopting, including collecting adoption fees
- Assisting with maintenance of the Rescue Ranch, including cleaning of windows, floors, and restrooms; pulling weeds, making minor repairs, checking gates and locks for security purposes, and reporting any safety or liability concerns to the Facilities
- Supervisor and the Executive Director
- Driving various vehicles, as needed, and follow safe driving practices, including obeying all traffic laws.Required Skills/Abilities include the ability to:
- Handle all animals in a safe manner
- Work in an environment with constant animal noises
- Continuously work around and with animals
- Analyze a situation and adopt a course of action
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, agencies, and organizations
- Maintain current and accurate records
- Understand and follow instructions
- Learn and use computer programs utilized by Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue
- Must have a valid California Driver’s License and must not have more than two at-fault incidents in a three-year period, no major at-fault violations in the last ten years and must be insured.
- Operate motor vehicles, farm equipment, and motorized tools
- Climb and/or work from elevated spaces
Education & Experience (must know or be able to):
- Learn the physical and behavioral characteristics of animals
- Learn to recognize symptoms of distemper, parvo, and rabies
- Learn basic first aid
- Complete Marley’s Mutts training to drive Marley’s Mutts vehicles.
- Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, pull, push, or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Must be able to carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time Must be able to frequently work in a bent or stooped position Must be able to use chemicals and cleaning agents Must be able to walk and work on uneven surfaces
Working Conditions
- May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces
- May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases
- May be exposed to various chemicals
- Will be working in different elements (i.e., extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.)
- Will be working in a rural area and environment, where possible exposure to wildlife exists
Pay: From $16.90 per hour
