JOB SUMMARY
The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the organization's accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries and account reconciliations, assisting with month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position plays a key role in financial reporting, audit support, fixed asset accounting, banking activities, vendor fee administration, and financial analysis. The Staff Accountant works closely with internal departments, external auditors, financial institutions, vendors, and other business partners to support the organization's financial objectives and operational effectiveness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Prepare and post journal entries and maintain general ledger accounts in accordance with monthly close schedules.
· Reconcile balance sheet accounts and research variances to ensure accurate financial reporting.
· Prepare monthly financial reports, account analyses, and supporting schedules.
· Administer vendor fee, licensing, promotional, patronage dividend, spoilage, and damage accounting processes, including invoicing and remittances.
· Manage banking activities, including ACH transactions, positive pay files, and cash account reconciliations.
· Maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, property tax filings, and supporting documentation.
· Coordinate annual audit activities, including preparation of workpapers, schedules, and auditor requests.
· Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and special projects.
· Maintain compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies.
· Support process improvements, documentation, and other accounting or administrative functions as needed.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
· Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience with responsibility for general ledger and month-end close activities.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles.
· Experience preparing account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience using accounting or ERP systems.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and professionalism when handling confidential financial information.
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience supporting annual audits and working with external auditors.
· Experience with fixed asset accounting, property tax reporting, and banking activities.
· Experience in a cooperative, produce, food distribution, agricultural, or supply chain environment.
· Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
· Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including data analysis and reporting functions.
WORK LOCATION
In-office (Phoenix, Arizona).
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
