- The Referral Coordinator / Medical Assistant at MARK TWAIN HEALTH CARE DISTRICT is responsible for managing patient referrals and ensuring seamless communication between healthcare providers and patients. This role involves coordinating appointments, verifying insurance information, and providing administrative support to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and manage patient referrals, ensuring timely scheduling and communication with both patients and healthcare providers.
- Verify insurance information and obtain necessary authorizations for referrals and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and documentation in compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Serve as a liaison between patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies to facilitate smooth referral processes.
- Provide administrative support to healthcare providers, including scheduling appointments, managing correspondence, and handling patient inquiries.
- Assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician, including taking vital signs and preparing patients for examinations.
- Ensure patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA regulations and guidelines.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of best practices in referral management.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program preferred.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years experience working as a Medical Assistant in a healthcare setting.
- Experience in coordinating patient referrals and managing appointment scheduling.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems. Athena a plus.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective interaction with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Proficiency in using medical software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
