Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Referral Clerk to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in managing patient referrals and prior authorizations. The Clerk will be responsible for making referral appointments to specialists and other healthcare providers as well as obtaining prior authorizations for medications and procedures ordered by providers.
Responsibilities
- Make patient referral appointments to specialists for conditions identified by the provider.
- Obtain prior authorizations for diagnostic testing ordered by providers.
- Make patient appointments for diagnostic testing, forwarding appropriate provider's order and prior authorization information necessary for the referral source to bill.
- Obtain prior authorizations for medications prescribed by providers, notifying pharmacies as necessary of the approval/denial.
- Receive reports from referral sources and scan into EMR software.
- Maintain an up-to-date referral source listing in EMR software.
- Answer telephone, giving information about the practice within the limits of practice policy. Route clinical questions and emergency calls to clinical staff or provider. Take detailed messages as necessary.
- Schedule patient appointments for clinic visits.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in medical administration or related field is preferred.
- Experience in a medical office setting is highly desirable, with familiarity in managed care environments.
- Proficiency in medical terminology and coding practices is essential.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail to ensure accuracy in record keeping.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective interaction with patients and staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with medical office procedures is a plus but not mandatory.
