Position Summary The Social Studies Teacher will deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in U.S. history, world history, civics, geography, and economics to students (grades 68 or 9-12). This full-time position embeds maritime themes such as Great Lakes trade, port history, naval service, and environmental policy into rigorous, real-world learning experiences. The teacher will also collaborate with CTE teams to integrate social studies into TMATs maritime pathways and simulator experiences.

Duties & Responsibilities Design and teach courses aligned with the Ohio Learning Standards for social studies, including U.S. History, World History, Government, and Economics. Integrate maritime-related content: Great Lakes commerce and cultural history, maritime law, environmental policy, and port operations. Develop projectbased learning units, for instance, mock legislative debates on maritime policy, mapping trade routes, or oral histories of port communities.

Coordinate with CTE, STEM, and English teachers to ensure interdisciplinary learning, such as incorporating simulator exercises into civics lessons or reading technical maritime reports. Use formative and summative assessments, including simulations and policy portfolios, to track student progress and differentiate instruction. Advise or oversee student-led clubs (model UN, civic engagement, or Maritime Heritage Club) and lead field experiences to local historical sites or port facilities. Communicate with students, families, and school staff on academic progress, behavior, and pathway transitions.

Maintain accurate records in the schools systems; participate in department planning, professional learning communities, and advisory councils. Contribute to school-wide initiatives Desired Qualifications Required: Demonstrated knowledge of Ohios Learning Standards for Social Studies and the ability to design rigorous, standards-based lessons. Strong classroom management skills with a focus on building positive student relationships and fostering civic engagement. Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including advanced, struggling, and English Learner students.

Effective communication and collaboration skills with students, families, colleagues, and community partners. Commitment to experiential and project-based learning, especially in ways that connect classroom content to real-world issues and maritime contexts. Bachelors degree in History, Social Studies Education, Political Science, or a related field. Completion of an Ohio-approved educator preparation program.

Valid Ohio Adolescence to Young Adult (AYA) Integrated Social Studies (712) license, often requires: OAE: Assessment of Professional Knowledge - AYA (712) (pedagogy) OAE: Integrated Social Studies content assessment (025) Completion of Ohio BCI and FBI background checks as required by state law Must maintain compliance with all ODE licensure renewal requirements and remain in good standing as a properly certified educator under Ohio law. Preferred: Experience teaching U.S. History, World History, Government, or Economics in an urban or diverse educational setting with a focus on interdisciplinary or experiential learning.. Background or strong interest in maritime, environmental, or regional history, particularly the Great Lakes and Toledos port community.

Familiarity with College Credit Plus (CCP), Advanced Placement (AP), or dual enrollment programs. Experience designing or facilitating interdisciplinary projects (e.g., linking history with science, environmental or maritime content, economics with trade simulations, or civics with environmental policy). Proficiency with educational technology tools such as interactive maps, Powerschool, GIS, online simulations, and learning management systems. Strong interest in community partnerships with museums, universities, port authorities, and veterans/naval organizations.

Masters degree or advanced coursework in Social Studies Education, History, Political Science, or Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field. Physical Demands Typical middle school or high school classroom environment: lecturing, facilitating discussion, and supervising group activities. Frequent screen/computer use for lesson planning, grading, and digital instruction platforms. Movement between classrooms, labs, simulation areas, or occasionally off-site locations (e.g., museum, port terminal, historical site).

Light lifting and setup of instructional materials, display boards, or exhibits. Supervisory duties during after-school activities or external learning experiences.
