This position will have a Fall 2026 start date. 

Full-time, 9-month (174 days) – may include some evening and weekend hours. The primary teaching load will be in person instruction.


POSITION SUMMARY

Effectively teach courses in a variety of formats, including online, onsite, partner location courses; assess student learning, develop curriculum, advise students, and complete other assignments that enable the department to achieve its purposes and advance the mission of Marion Technical College (the "College").

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Respond to inquiries from students, College employees and customers while maintaining standards of confidentiality and privacy, in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the College, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation.
  2. Teach Criminal Justice courses in traditional, blended, and online formats using applied learning methods in accordance with the course objectives, the established syllabus, the schedule of classes, and other College and program requirements. Instruct in a variety of learning environments, both on and off campus, which may include web-based, high schools, and other sites. 
  3. Demonstrate expertise in one's discipline and use enthusiasm and creativity in teaching to create an environment that motivates students to learn. Manage the classroom and maintain courses including syllabi, learning materials, technology, and web-based content for distant delivery.
  4. Evaluate student learning in accordance with the standards on course syllabi, department and institutional academic assessment plans, and College policy. 
  5. Document accurate records and provide reports concerning grades, attendance, etc. in accordance with the College policy. Review literature, professional standards, and workplace expectations to ensure that teaching and learning reflects prevailing business and industry practice and standards.
  6. Work with peer faculty in assessment and continuous improvement of program curricula and courses, including course updating, development, and elimination. Serve as curriculum coordinator for courses assigned by the Associate Dean and mentor community faculty who teach those courses.
  7. Plan, develop, and implement departmental goals. Contribute to the use and continuous improvement of web-based learning, including the strategic planning and development of distance and/or web-based education.
  8. Advise students for successful course, goal, or degree completion. Evaluate students’ learning performance, offer suggestions to improve learning, and guide students’ progress through the curriculum. Assist students with registration.
  9. Keep current schedule on-campus office hours to accommodate student learning and academic advising. Maintain user proficiency for software programs, systems, and databases used by the College. 
  10. Build and maintain professional contacts with public safety agencies throughout the region to assess community and educational needs; assist the department in meeting those needs consistent with the College mission and department goals. 
  11. Work with College faculty and administration in seeking and writing grant applications that provide funds for course and program development and enhancement, equipment, and other areas assigned by the Dean.
  1. Partner with campus and community activities, including student recruitment and public speaking requests, and serve on State, College, and community committees as assigned by the Dean.
  2. Teach lecture and laboratory courses using laboratory equipment. Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment and conduct on-going inventory assessment of supplies including chemicals, drugs, ammunition, and weapons. Establish and monitor safety practices within the classroom and laboratory. 
  3. Create materials list to keep the laboratory learning-ready. 
  4. Create and pursue a plan for professional development and continuing education to keep pace with changes and advances in teaching, learning, and in one's technical specialty or discipline. Willingness to dedicate and commit to pursue continuing education, which may include higher educational degrees, certifications, and advance current knowledge of and practice in the discipline.
  5. Attend on- or off-campus College meetings and serve on departmental and College committees as assigned. 
  6. Maintain a regular recruitment schedule at local career centers including but not limited to classroom visits, criminal justice campus visits, and criminal justice explorer academy for middle and high school students. 
  7. Integrate and apply Guided Pathways principles within all job functions and responsibilities.

INSTRUCTIONAL WORKLOAD REQUIREMENTS

This position is expected to instruct a minimum of 15 workload hours per week for both fall and spring terms. A minimum of 80% of the position directly or indirectly involves responsibilities pertaining to teaching and learning. The remaining 20% involves but not limited to responsibilities listed in the job description and other duties, as determined by the area Dean. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science required. Master's degree preferred. Teaching experience, including online, within a college and/or university is desired. Exhibit excellent English, communication, and writing skills. Proficiency in Microsoft® Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) with strong computer and related technology skills required. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and complete projects with minimal direction and oversight. Any combination of work experience, training, and/or education equivalent may be accepted. Candidate must successfully pass a background check, prior to and after employment. Willingness to work an irregular schedule as assigned. Valid driver’s license or dependable transportation required.

ADA SPECIFICATIONS

This position is classified as Faculty and will teach in a wide range of educational venues to provide quality instruction to a diverse student population for the College, primarily in a classroom or office setting. Further information may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.
