A Specialized Behavior Intervention Technician (SBIT) is a highly trained paraprofessional who provides direct, intensive support to students demonstrating severe and persistent behavioral needs that significantly impact their ability to safely access the highly modified special education environment and general education setting. These students exhibit behaviors that may include, but are not limited to, significant physical aggression, severe self-injurious behaviors, elopement, or other high-intensity behaviors that are not responsive to modified classroom interventions, behavior intervention plan, and/or crisis plan.
Assignment of a Specialized Behavior Intervention Technician is based on data-driven decision-making and occurs only after less restrictive supports and interventions have been implemented and determined to be insufficient to meet the student's needs within the school setting. Individuals serving in this role must successfully complete specialized training in behavior intervention, crisis prevention and response, de-escalation techniques, safety procedures, data collection, and implementation of specialized programming totaling to 40 hours of training yearly by the district's Board Certified Behavior Analysts.
Specialized Behavior Intervention Technicians are assigned in a 2:1 support model, with two trained staff members supporting one student. This staffing structure is necessary to ensure student and staff safety, maintain fidelity to individualized behavior intervention plans, provide consistent implementation of specialized programming, and effectively respond to high-intensity behavioral episodes. Technicians work collaboratively with district Behavior Analyst, special education staff, related service providers, and administrators to implement individualized interventions, collect behavioral data, and support progress toward educational and behavioral goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
? Provide direct, intensive behavioral support to students with severe and persistent behavioral needs, including significant aggression, self-injurious behavior, elopement, property destruction, and other high-risk behaviors.
? Implement individualized , Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), safety plans, crisis response procedures, and specialized programming with fidelity and consistency.
? Maintain continuous supervision and close proximity to assigned students to ensure safety and support engagement in educational activities.
? Utilize specialized de-escalation, crisis prevention, and behavior intervention techniques as trained and approved by the district.
? Respond appropriately to behavioral crises while following district policies, safety protocols, and student-specific intervention procedures as trained.
? Collect, record, and maintain accurate behavioral and academic curriculum data to support progress monitoring and data-based decision making.
? Assist in conducting functional behavior support strategies by documenting antecedents, behaviors, consequences, and other relevant behavioral data.
? Collaborate regularly with district behavior analysts, special education teachers, administrators, school psychologists, related service providers, and other support staff regarding student progress and behavioral needs.
? Support students in developing replacement behaviors, self-regulation skills, coping strategies, communication skills, and independence across educational settings for generalization.
? Assist students with transitions between activities, classrooms, and school environments while proactively addressing potential behavioral triggers.
? Maintain adherence to all student-specific safety protocols and procedures designed to reduce the likelihood of behavioral escalation.
? Participate in required specialized training, recertification, and professional development related to behavior intervention such as crisis management, student safety, etc.
? Communicate effectively with supervising staff regarding behavioral concerns, emerging trends, safety issues, and student progress.
? Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district policies and federal and state regulations.
? Assist with environmental modifications and preventative strategies designed to reduce behavioral incidents and increase student success.
? Support the implementation of academic instruction as directed by certified staff while maintaining behavioral expectations and engagement.
? Work as part of a 2:1 support team to ensure consistent implementation of specialized programming, maintain safety, and preserve fidelity to intervention protocols.
? Monitor and document incidents involving aggression, self-injury, elopement, restraint, seclusion, or other significant behavioral events in accordance with district procedures.
? Participate in team meetings for problem-solving discussions related to student behavioral programming and support needs.
? Perform other duties related to intensive behavioral support and student safety as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Qualifications
? Experience working with children with behavioral or special needs preferred.
? Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
? Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
? Ability to follow behavior plans and directions from certified staff.
? Ability to implement a crisis prevention program during crisis situations. (Verbal and physical de-escalation)
? Attend a required 5-Day specialized training program to receive appropriate certification.

? Ability to safely respond during behavioral crises, including possible physical intervention if trained and required.
? Ability to supervise students in various school environments indoors and outdoors.
