Position: Van Driver

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Description:  We are looking for someone who enjoys working with students and driving.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Obtain and maintain a minimum of a valid Class D3 Chauffeur's license
  • Pass pre-employment and subsequent driving history checks
  • Pass pre-employment and periodic background history checks
  • Pass a pre-employment substance abuse screening
  • Pass all random alcohol and/or drug tests
  • Pass all reasonable suspicion alcohol and/or drug tests
  • Work well with others, including all personality types
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of, or ability to navigate, Marion and surrounding areas
  • Have and use effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effectively manage student behavior
  • Accept and implement coaching and training

Consistently perform thorough and accurate pre-trip and post-trip inspections 

Job Summary:

  • Safely transport students to and from school, activities, etc.
  • Effectively and appropriately manage student behaviors
  • Maintain a cooperative attitude and build rapport with students, peers, supervisors, parents, school personnel, and the community
  • Use effective and professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Present self in a professional manner including attire and being alert and attentive
  • Successfully complete all required trainings, meetings, classes and professional development
  • Work together as a team to keep interior and exterior of vehicle clean, safe and presentable
  • Quickly and safely evacuate vehicle in case of an emergency
  • Check student roster to ensure proper ridership
  • Maintain current knowledge of all student requirements, such as medical protocols, IEP's, etc. and respond appropriately to events by following written protocols
  • While students are exiting, check vehicle for remaining/lost students, items, etc.
  • Properly secure students in required safety equipment and restraints (i.e. booster seats, wheelchairs, harnesses, etc.)
  • Safely assist non-ambulatory students into and out of the vehicle
  • Accurately complete reports and paperwork in a timely manner. Including, vehicle maintenance requests, student behavior referrals, timecards, directions, etc.
  • Abide by federal law, state law, and district policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Utilize technology when required
  • Consistently perform thorough and accurate pre-trip and post trip inspections
  • Immediately report accidents
  • Ensure vehicle is properly fueled according to department policy
  • Prepare vehicle for student transport including inclement weather, harnesses, booster seats, etc.
  • Safely and appropriately operate various types of vehicles and equipment including radios, and emergency equipment
  • Report any safety or maintenance concerns to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
  • Report all moving violations to Transportation Manager, including any received while on or off the clock
  • Clean van as designated by department procedures
  • Other duties, as assigned

Environment:

  • Indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing temperatures including extreme heat and cold
  • Direct contact with the public, students, and other district staff
  • May be exposed to heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, and other odors
  • May be subject to tight deadlines and continuously changing priorities and interruptions
  • Work with moving vehicles, motorized wheelchair lifts and other equipment

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time
  • Entering and exiting vehicles regularly
  • Descend from back door of vehicle in emergencies onto uncertain surfaces
  • Repeatedly lifting and carrying students or object(s) weighing up to 75 pounds for 100 or more feet
  • Repeatedly pushing and pulling wheelchairs/objects(s) weighing up to 75 pounds for 100 or more feet
  • Continuous use of hands, fingers, and wrists repetitively
  • Using both hands and legs simultaneously
  • Repeated stooping, bending, and kneeling
  • Occasional pushing, pulling and maintaining balance
  • Rapid mental/muscular coordination
  • Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner
  • Accurate depth perception
  • Clarity of vision at varying distances to see small details
  • Operate mobile motorized equipment
  • Drive a vehicle to conduct work

Hazards:

  • Possible contact with blood borne pathogens and/or bodily fluids
  • Contact with chemicals used for cleaning buses
