This job is an experienced automotive mechanic’s position, requiring the knowledge and ability to perform diagnosis and repairs of minor and major mechanical problems.

A. Abide by the "Law Enforcement Code of Ethics". 

B. Perform automotive and equipment maintenance, repair, and diagnostics to Agency vehicles and equipment in the following specialized areas: 

  • Suspension and Steering 

  • Brakes 

  • Heating and Air Conditioning 

  • Engine Performance 

  • Engine Repair 

  • Automotive Transmission/ Transaxle  

  • Manual Drive Train and Axles 

  • Electrical Systems

C. Assist other technicians when required. 

D. Install decals and window tinting on vehicles 

E. Assist Fleet Services Director or Fleet Services Supervisor with administrative functions as required. 

F. Attend schools or seminars required to maintain certification and keep abreast with current applied technology. 

G. Assist with the inspection of Fleet Services equipment in operation to assure proper safe and efficient functioning. 

H. Be alert for conditions or situations, which inhibit safe and efficient operation of the Agency or the Fleet Services Division and make recommendations for solutions. 

I. Perform other related duties as assigned. 

J. Perform other related duties, as assigned, including modified schedule or temporary re-assignment during declared emergency or activations, as determined by the Sheriff.

JOB PREREQUISITES: 

High School Diploma or GED. 

ASE Automotive Technician Certification in any four of the eight specialized automotive categories is preferred.

Minimum of two years of experience in the automotive repair industry as approved by the Fleet Director, or a diploma from an accredited two-year Vocational Training program in Auto Mechanics. 

Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the automotive mechanical trade. Knowledge of, and ability to operate, diagnostic equipment. 

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade. 

Ability to understand and carry out English language oral and written instructions.


JOB REQUIREMENTS: 
Obtain and Maintain ASE Automobile Technician Certifications. 
Obtain and Maintain EVT Law Enforcement Vehicle Technician Certification. 
Obtain MACS Mobile Air Conditioning Certification.
Possess and maintain valid Florida driver's license. 
Must be able to follow instructions



WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to open shop environment of humidity, heat, cold, and so on. May be exposed to hazards such as exhaust gases, asbestos, shop accidents, and so forth. Exposed to all highway hazards during road testing of vehicles. Required to work overtime when necessary. Subject to occasional call outs. May occasionally be required to attend overnight or longer seminars or training schools.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Work environment requires the continuous operation of hand and power tools and the full range of shop equipment to very exacting tolerances, calling for full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability in order to achieve full production to acceptable standards. Tasks may involve occasional heavy lifting or moving, standing, stooping, crawling, kneeling. Added emphasis is placed upon the coordination and hand use and manipulation skills with tasks that require the following sensory demands. 
  • Color perception and discrimination.

  • Sound perception and discrimination.

  • Odor perception and discrimination. 

  • Depth perception and discrimination. 

  • Texture perception and discrimination. 

  • Visual perception and discrimination

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium to heavy work that involves walking or standing most of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, and skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within high tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job risk exposure to bright and dim light, dust and pollen, extreme heat and or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, fumes and or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, toxic/caustic chemicals and explosives. 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: 

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception and texture perception.
