Member Madison County Board of Zoning Appeals

Compensation All board members are offered an equal, structured stipend per meeting attended, as established by the Madison County Board of Commissioners. This stipend is intended to compensate members for their time and participation in scheduled meetings and public hearings; however, acceptance of compensation is at the discretion of each individual member. Purpose The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is a quasi-judicial body established to interpret and apply zoning regulations in accordance with the Madison County Zoning Resolution and the Ohio Revised Code. The BZA helps ensure fair and lawful zoning practices by hearing appeals, granting variances, and authorizing conditional uses. Duties and Responsibilities * Hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, or determination made in the enforcement of the zoning resolution by administrative officials (e.g., Zoning Inspector). * Review requests for variances from the strict application of zoning requirements where there is proposed hardship or practical difficulty, depending on the nature of the variance. * Consider and decide on conditional use applications as specifically listed in the zoning resolution, ensuring proposed uses meet established criteria and standards. * Interpret zoning provisions fairly and consistently. Ensure decisions align with the Madison County Zoning Resolution and the Ohio Revised Code.

Qualifications * Resident of Madison County. * Familiarity with land use, zoning principles, or willingness to learn. * Ability to analyze facts, apply legal standards, and act impartially. * Commitment to public service, ethical conduct, and professionalism. Meeting Schedule Typically meets monthly or as needed, depending on case volume. May require occasional evening attendance for public hearings

· Works in partnership with the Madison County Planning and Zoning Department.
