Position Overview
The Formulation Technician supports the development, testing, and production of cosmetic, skincare and personal-care products. This role works closely with formulation chemists to prepare lab batches, evaluate product stability and performance, maintain laboratory equipment, and ensure all work complies with regulatory and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Formulation & Product Development
- Assist chemists in preparing formulations (creams, serums, cleansers, balms, emulsions, gels, etc.).
- Accurately weigh and measure raw materials using laboratory equipment.
- Follow formulation procedures to create bench samples and pilot batches.
- Record observations related to texture, viscosity, color, pH, and other performance metrics.
Testing & Quality Control
- Conduct routine physical and analytical tests (pH, viscosity, stability, compatibility testing, etc.).
- Perform accelerated stability studies and maintain test logs.
- Evaluate batch appearance, homogeneity, and sensory characteristics.
- Document results and flag abnormalities to senior staff.
Lab Maintenance & Operations
- Clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments (homogenizers, mixers, viscometers, scales).
- Organize raw material inventory and ensure proper labeling and storage.
- Prepare stability chambers and maintain sample archives.
- Ensure the lab meets regulatory, safety, and hygiene standards.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate batch records, data sheets, and test reports.
- Track lot numbers, preparation dates, and formulas in laboratory notebooks or digital LIMS systems.
- Assist with the creation of SOPs and formulation guides.
Qualifications
Education
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Biology, or related field.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and excellent record-keeping.
- Basic understanding of cosmetic raw materials and formulation principles.
- Ability to follow SOPs and safety procedures.
- Proficiency with lab equipment and measurement tools.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Experience
- Previous experience in a cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or personal-care lab.
- Familiarity with GMP and cosmetic regulatory guidelines (FDA, EU, ISO 22716).
Work Environment
- Laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals, fragrances, and active ingredients.
- Requires standing for extended periods and occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
- Use of PPE (lab coat, gloves, goggles) required.
