Job Description Summary
The Lead Diabetes Nurse Specialist provides lead support for the Inpatient Diabetes Care Program and the Advanced Inpatient Disease Specific Joint Commission Certification. The Lead Diabetes Nurse Specialist ensures the care of the patient with diabetes (PWD) throughout the continuum by working with the interdisciplinary team members to ensure comprehensive care of the PWD. The Lead Diabetes Nurse Specialist works seamlessly with the Diabetes Coordinator and Diabetes Care Program Manager to ensure all aspects of the Advanced Inpatient Disease Specific Joint Commission Certification are met, including but not limited to data collection, abstraction, validation, clinical interpretation and reporting.

Job Requirements, Prerequisites And Essential Functions
EDUCATION
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with current licensure in the State of California.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree preferred.
- Experience with Joint Commission Inpatient advanced diabetes care is required
- Significant clinical experience in the field of inpatient diabetes care is required including the ability to interpret data from the clinical record
- Experience in electronic medical records, data management and clinical analysis is required
- Experience with individual and group teaching methodologies is required
- Knowledge of clinical care and/or guidelines for endocrine diagnoses including but not limited to diabetes (all types) and stress hyperglycemia
- Demonstrated teaching and leadership abilities
- Demonstrated oral and written skills
- Demonstrated computer skills
- Demonstrated presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and develop positive interactions with interdisciplinary members (physicians, staff and other disciplines) and patients/families/caregivers
- Ability to communicate well, verbally and in writing
- Ability to set priorities, achieve objectives, solve problems, meet deadlines, coordinate simultaneous projects, and make decisions

- Current valid California RN license
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) (previously Certified Diabetes Educator CDE) certification required within 90 days of hire.
- If new graduate RN, CDCES certificate to be completed based upon timeline from Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education
