Marine Technician

Position Summary

The Marine Technician diagnoses, repairs, and maintains boats and outboard/inboard engines, ensuring units are returned to customers safe, reliable, and ready for the water. This role works closely with the service advisor to understand customer concerns, perform accurate diagnostics, and complete quality repairs on schedule. Work shifts seasonally between general repairs and service in peak season and winterization/de-winterization and larger repair or rebuild projects in the off-season.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and rigging issues on boats and outboard/inboard/sterndrive engines

• Perform routine maintenance: oil changes, filter changes, tune-ups, lower unit service, and inspections

• Complete repairs as outlined on repair orders, documenting labor, parts used, and findings

• Communicate with the service advisor on diagnosis, needed parts, additional work, and timelines

• Perform winterization and de-winterization services (fogging engines, draining water systems, fluid changes, etc.)

• Test-run and water-test boats as needed to confirm repairs before customer pickup

• Install accessories, electronics, and aftermarket parts as requested

• Keep the service bay, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and in good working condition

• Follow manufacturer specifications and safety procedures for all repairs and maintenance

• Flag any additional issues found during a job so the service advisor can inform the customer

• Keep repair orders updated with accurate time, parts, and notes for accurate customer billing

• Assist with training or mentoring less experienced technicians as needed

Daily To-Do Checklist

A general rhythm for the day — order and emphasis will shift with the day's repair order load and season.

• Review assigned repair orders and priority for the day with the service advisor

• Gather needed parts and tools before starting each job

• Perform diagnostics, maintenance, or repairs on assigned units

• Update the service advisor on findings, needed parts, or additional approval before proceeding

• Document labor time, parts used, and repair notes on each repair order as work is completed

• Test-run or water-test completed repairs to confirm proper operation

• Clean up the work bay and return tools/equipment to their proper place

• Communicate completed jobs to the service advisor so customers can be notified

• Report any parts needed for the next day's jobs

• Confirm next day's assigned repair orders before heading out

Qualifications & Skills

• Experience diagnosing and repairing marine engines (outboard, inboard, and/or sterndrive) and boat systems

• Manufacturer certifications (e.g., Mercury, Yamaha, Volvo Penta) a plus

• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills

• Comfortable using diagnostic tools and following manufacturer service manuals

• Detail-oriented with accurate documentation habits for repair orders

• Own basic hand tools; dealership provides specialty/diagnostic equipment

• Ability to work efficiently under deadlines, especially during peak season

• Prior marine technician experience preferred; strong automotive/small-engine techs with willingness to train also considered

Work Environment

This is a hands-on shop role at a marine dealership and service center, working in the service bay and occasionally on the water for test runs. Volume is highest during spring and summer with general repairs and maintenance, shifting toward winterization, de-winterization, and larger repair projects in the off-season.

Pay: $35,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
