What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sales Coordinator - Marine Technology position at Marine Technical Services?
PRINCIPALS ONLY – NO RECRUITERS
Sales Coordinator - Marine Technology
Marine Electronics & Electrical Systems
Marine Technical Services (MTS) is seeking a motivated, technically knowledgeable Technical Marine Sales Coordinator to join our team and develop into a key member of our sales and project management operation.
This is not a traditional high-pressure sales position. We are looking for someone who understands boats, enjoys working with customers, can learn complex systems, and wants to build or continue to build a career in the marine industry.
MTS is an established leader in marine electronics and electrical sales, installation, troubleshooting, and service on the Chesapeake Bay. We work on everything from center consoles and cruising sailboats to large motor yachts and ocean-crossing trawlers and catamarans, representing and supporting many of the industry's leading manufacturers.
We have built our reputation by doing high-quality work, solving difficult problems, and standing behind the systems we sell and install. Our employee turnover is low, our business continues to grow as it has continuously for the past 20 years. This position offers a unique opportunity for the right person to become an integral part of a successful company and develop into a sales and project management role.
The Position
The Technical Sales Coordinator will initially work alongside experienced MTS personnel to learn our sales process, estimating standards, product lines, installation practices, and customer base. There are also a variety of opportunities to help with general business practices relating to marketing, bookkeeping and daily operations. If you like working on boats, there will be occasional opportunities to assist on projects.
Responsibilities will grow with experience and demonstrated capability.
The position will include:
- Responding to new customer inquiries and helping determine their needs
- Gathering detailed vessel and system information necessary to properly scope projects
- Recommending appropriate equipment and system solutions
- Preparing estimates and proposals for marine electronics and electrical projects
- Following up on open opportunities and maintaining communication with customers
- Coordinating with MTS technicians to ensure proposed solutions are technically sound and practical to install
- Conducting vessel visits when necessary to evaluate existing equipment, installation conditions, access, and project requirements
- Developing familiarity with installation labor requirements so estimates accurately reflect project scope
- Coordinating the transition of sold projects from sales into scheduling and production
- Maintaining organized records of opportunities, estimates, customer communications, and required follow-up
- Developing long-term relationships with boat owners, captains, boatyards, brokers, manufacturers, and other marine-industry professionals
- Continuing to develop technical knowledge through manufacturer and industry training
Over time, the successful candidate will assume increasing responsibility for independently managing customer relationships and projects from initial inquiry through proposal, installation, and completion.
What We're Looking For
Marine experience is essential. You do not need to be a marine technician, but you must understand boats well enough to have an intelligent conversation with an experienced boat owner, captain, or technician.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Significant personal or professional experience with powerboats and/or sailboats
- Strong working knowledge of major marine electronics manufacturers and equipment
- Working knowledge of marine DC and AC electrical systems
- Familiarity with navigation systems, radar, sonar, autopilots, VHF/AIS, NMEA 2000 networking, satellite communications, A/V systems, batteries, charging systems, inverters, solar, and related onboard systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple active opportunities and follow-up responsibilities
- Comfort working directly with customers ranging from recreational boat owners to professional captains
- Ability and willingness to learn technical material and attain industry and manufacturer certifications
- Sound judgment and a practical approach to problem solving
- College degree preferred
Knowledge of leading manufacturers of marine electrical and electronic equipment is highly desirable.
Prior sales experience is helpful but not required. We are more interested in finding someone with the right combination of marine knowledge, intelligence, communication skills, organization, initiative, and willingness to learn.
Who Will Do Well Here
The right candidates are genuinely interested in boats and marine technology and want more than simply another job. Everyone at MTS loves coming to work. We don’t want that changing so “fit” is also very important to us.
You should enjoy figuring out what a customer is trying to accomplish, asking good questions, learning how systems work, and developing a solution that makes sense technically and financially. You also need to be comfortable saying, "I don't know, but I'll find out." Marine electrical and electronics systems are too broad for anyone to know everything. MTS has highly experienced technical advisors and technicians and strong manufacturer relationships available as technical resources. The ability to ask the right questions and follow through is more important than pretending to know every answer or always have the best or correct answer.
MTS is a customer-centric business with a traditional, high-touch approach to customer service. Much of our business comes from repeat customers, referrals, and customers who simply walk through our door because of the reputation MTS has built over many years. While that approach has served us extremely well, some of our internal technology and processes have not yet caught up with the sophistication of the business. We do not currently operate with a fully integrated CRM or field service management (FSM) platform, so this position requires exceptional personal organization, follow-through, and attention to detail. At any given time, the Sales & Project Manager may be managing numerous inquiries, estimates, customer questions, technician follow-ups, equipment research, and active projects simultaneously.
Nothing can simply live in someone's head or inbox; the successful candidate must have a demonstrated ability to create structure, maintain accurate records, track commitments, prioritize competing demands, and reliably close loops without constant supervision. Experience successfully using—and particularly helping implement—modern cloud-based CRM and/or FSM systems would be a significant plus.
This position requires initiative. We are looking for someone who sees what needs to happen next and takes responsibility for moving it forward and doesn’t need constant instruction on what needs to happen next. In other words, candidates that are self-starters, entrepreneurs that have experience with consistently hitting goals and achievements are strongly encouraged to apply. If you are a strong candidate, thank you for reading this far into this job description. If you want to move to the front of the line for an interview, call and ask to speak with the general manager.
Why MTS
MTS has developed a strong reputation in the Chesapeake Bay marine industry as a technically capable, professional, full-service marine electronics and electrical company.
Our customers trust us with sophisticated vessels and substantial projects because we provide more than equipment installation. We help design systems, troubleshoot difficult problems, support the products we sell, and offer strong post-project support on MTS installed systems.
MTS is a small privately held company. That means elite performers can make the biggest impact.
Someone who succeeds in this position will not disappear into a large corporate sales organization. You will work directly with company leadership, experienced marine technicians, customers, and major manufacturers. You will see the projects you sell being installed and will have the opportunity to develop substantial technical and business knowledge along the way.
For the right person, this is an opportunity to build a long-term career and become an important part of the future of MTS.
Compensation
Reasonable base starting salary plus performance-based compensation commensurate with experience and marine technical knowledge plus retirement savings account with a 3% match and a 50% reimbursement on your health insurance plan. Paid vacation/personal/sick time. Company sponsored training.
