Summary Of Position

The Project Engineer position performs a variety of structural engineering duties, including inspection, assessment, evaluation, analysis, design, and technical document preparation. To fulfill these obligations, Structural Engineers must be able to conduct assigned structural engineering work in compliance with applicable engineering codes, procedures, practices, and standards.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs field inspection and evaluation of structures under direction of a higher-level engineer.
  • Performs testing of materials and incorporates results into reports under direction of a higher-level engineer.
  • Performs complex engineering computations involving conventional engineering practices under direction of a higher-level engineer.
  • Prepares comprehensive engineering documents including inspection reports, design plans and specifications under direction of a higher-level engineer.
  • Actively participates in internal project meetings and works to actively resolve project issues.
  • Actively promotes a safe work culture.

You Will Need

  • Technical knowledge, experience, and capabilities in structural engineering.
  • Proficiency in computer-assisted civil engineering and office software and equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in the English language.
  • Ability to define problems, collect/interpret data, evaluate facts, draw valid conclusions, and effectively communicate findings/results.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and or Master’s degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited four-year university.
  • 0-4 years of relevant engineering experience.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT)
  • Valid US Driver’s License

  • FHWA-NHI #130055 – Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges
  • FHWA-NHI #130053 – Bridge Inspection Refresher
  • FHWA-NHI #130078 –Bridge Inspection Techniques for Nonredundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM) Refresher
  • FHWA-NHI #130087 – Ancillary Highway Structures
  • FHWA-NHI #130091 – Underwater Bridge Inspection
  • Valid US Passport


Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Safety

The duties of this position require the employee to regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. This position may require the employee to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While in the field, the intern may be required to walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather conditions, and stand up to eight hours or more at a time. This position requires maintaining current industry knowledge and expertise through active involvement in professional organizations and/or other activities that may require additional and/or flexible working hours. Compensation

The salary pay range is $76,000 to $89,000 for positions filled in Virginia.
