MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

 

JOB SUMMARY:  Fabricates, installs, and repairs rigging and weight-handling gear on ships and attaches hoists and pulling gear to rigging to lift, move and position machinery, equipment, structural parts, and other heavy loads aboard ship. 

                                                                                                                                              

SUPERVISES:  2nd Class, 3rd Class, & Rigging Handyman

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   

 

1.             Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.  Plans, outlines and                supervises a specific rigging task.

2.             Forms slings and towing bridles by looping and splicing cable or by crimping metal sleeve around                 cable end and body of cable, using crimping tool.

3.             Splices and ties rope to form nets, ladders, and other rigging.

4.             Installs hooks, swivels, and turnbuckles in rigging.  

5.             Reeves lines through blocks and pulleys.

6.             Sews canvas or leather covers on rigging at friction points, using sail twine and sail maker's palm   and needle.

7.             Selects and attaches gear, braces, and cushions, according to weight and distribution of load,           availability of hoisting machinery, and presence of obstacles.

8.             Signals workers operating cranes or other equipment to move load.

9.             Installs beam clamps, pad eyes, gallow frames, and other supporting structures for rigging gear.

10.          Controls movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or in confined spaces, using        jacks, pulley blocks, chainfalls, and rollers.

11.          Installs or repairs ship's rigging such as mast or antenna rigs, small boat handling gear, and              winch or windlass rigging.  

12.          Installs masts, booms, yardarms, and gaffs.

13.          Rigs and hangs scaffold and stages that require blocks and pulleys.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.             Mentors less experienced Rigging personnel

2.             Inspects lifting equipment and accessories.

3.             Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

1.             High school diploma or equivalent. 

2.             Must have four to five years of Rigging experience.

3.             Must have the ability to carry out written or oral instructions.

4.             Must know capacities of all rigging equipment used.

5.             Must be familiar with under hull rigging such as propellers, shafts and rudders

6.             Must be able to calculate the weight of equipment.

7.             Must be able to conduct weight test and/or pull test as required.

8.             Must know and be able to calculate capacities or wire rope and fiber rope.

9.             Must be able to calculate sling angles and their effects on rigging equipment.

10.          Must be able to work effectively with others.

11.          Must be steady, reliable worker.
