Position Specifics
The Pipe Welder is responsible for welding of various piping systems, sizes, and materials onboard ships; work in confined spaces and tight areas; assist pipefitter with fit up and installation of various piping systems and sizes.; must be familiar with the requirements of welding high pressure piping systems (using and understanding PCP’s); work from details, references, drawings, and specifications to ensure that final product meet quality requirements.

- Evaluates blueprints, schematic drawings and job specifications to determine work demands.
- Operates cutting torches, straightening presses and hand tools to redesign, reshape, and dismantle components and parts.
- Assemble and install metal pipes and pipe fittings for stainless and carbon steel projects.
- Removes slags and rough spots from workpieces by operating grinders or scrapers to ensure smooth work surface.
- Employs their knowledge of metallurgy to determine materials and equipment most suitable for a welding project.
- Cleans and prepares workpieces using chemical solutions etc. to remove foreign matter such as grease, rust etc.
- Ensures the proper set up of tools, welding equipment, and gases.
- Accomplishes all required stages of welding, burning, etc.
- Assists pipefitters in the installation of pipe.
- Ensures daily clean-up of work site at end of each shift.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of welding procedures, various types of welding equipment, proficient in flat, vertical, overhead, and horizontal welding; GTAW welding and air-arc skills.
- The ability to read and understand basic work specs, drawings, and diagrams.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ship board piping systems.
- Demonstrated ability to identify different piping systems based off of abbreviations commonly used onboard the ship.
- Demonstrated knowledge of MIL-STD-22D and NSTP-278.
- Demonstrated welding capability encompassing C/S (carbon-steel) pipe and CuNi (copper-nickel) test in all 6G positions, must be able to acquire certification to operate high reaching equipment.
- Maintains fire-watch qualification.
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Three (3) years’ experience in welding or completion of welding school.
Physical Requirements
- Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Shop, shipboard, warehouse, industrial environment.
- May be exposed to fumes and irritants including welding/burning fumes, paints, oils, greases and various cleaning solutions and solvents, noise, high heat and humidity hazards while wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Frequently moves throughout the shipyard.
- Work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairs/ladders/ramps, aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
- Must be able to move heavy equipment and boxes, weighing up to 40 pounds.
- May be exposed to rapid changes in microclimates, industrial processes, and other environmental factors while collecting data, providing direction, and observing performance of task teams.
