MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.
JOB SUMMARY: The Marine Insulator/Painter – 1st Class is responsible for the installation, repair, and removal of insulation systems and the preparation and application of marine coatings aboard naval and commercial vessels. This role supports ship repair, overhaul, and maintenance projects by ensuring insulation and protective coatings meet required safety, environmental, and performance standards

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.
- Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, and removing old coatings
- Perform surface preparation in accordance with SSPC/NACE standards
- Install, remove, and repair insulation on piping, tanks, ventilation systems, and machinery spaces
- Measure, cut, and fit insulation materials such as fiberglass, mineral wool, and foam
- Fabricate and install metal lagging (aluminum, stainless steel) and insulation jackets
- Inspect and maintain thermal and acoustic insulation systems
- Fills cracks and holes.
- Mixes and matches colors of paint, varnish, stain, shellac, and calcimine.
- Apply marine coatings, primers, and finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment
- Identify and report defects, corrosion, or insulation failures
- Document completed work and report progress to supervisors
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- five years of experience in marine coatings; two years of hands-on insulation experience preferred.
- Knowledge of insulation materials and coating systems
- Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work specifications
- knowledge of NAVSEA, OSHA, and environmental regulations for hazardous materials required
- Must be able to work effectively with other trades
- Must Maintain clean and organized work areas
