What are the responsibilities and job description for the Registered Nurse, preOP/PACU (Full-Time) - RN04 position at Marin Specialty Surgery Center?
Summary: The Registered Nurse – PreOp/PACU is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and coordinating patient care through the preoperative and/or postoperative phase of care. Participates with other facility team members to provide optimal patient care and efficient patient flow, taking into consideration the population-specific needs for patients at all stages of life.
Essential Responsibilities will include the following, and other duties may be assigned.
Patient Care Duties.
· Performs professional preoperative nursing care for patients to ensure a caring patient experience.
· Coordinates with other internal or external disciplines that are involved in providing patient care.
· Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care provided by coaching, training, and developing ancillary personnel while documenting findings.
· Evaluates outcomes and adjusts the nursing care plans as necessary in consultation with other nursing staff and physicians. Documents patient care and the response received from the care provided by staff.
· Enhances patient flow by proactively coordinating with other departments for patient care.
· Assures that patient is knowledgeable about the procedures being performed and communicates efficiently with family or support persons.
· Prepares patients for procedures and ensures that surgical sites are marked.
· Administers medication and controls narcotics for patients as ordered by the physician.
· Performs venipuncture as necessary for IV starts.
Patient Recovery Duties:
· Assesses the patient's recovery from sedation and/or anesthesia and makes appropriate judgments for nursing intervention. Recognizes life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates appropriate therapy and/or assures assistance.
· Monitors patient levels of consciousness through communication and appropriate observation of blood pressure, O2 saturation, cardiac and respiratory statuses.
· Prepare patients for discharge with postoperative instructions per orders from physicians and assesses patient readiness for discharge using discharge criteria.
Safety and Infection Control Duties:
· Adheres to established Company and safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
· Strictly adheres to aseptic techniques using a variety of supplies and instruments while actively monitoring the environment to ensure a sterile technique is maintained throughout procedures.
· Responsible for enforcing recommended standards and practices in support of infection control and anticipating breaks in sterilization techniques.
· Ensures procedure safety and success by leading the team responsible for participating actively in the time-out process.
· Actively adheres to standard safety procedures regarding proper personal sanitation and hygiene.
· Completes employee and patient incident documentation timely while identifying potentially unsafe conditions.
· Demonstrates a complete understanding of established emergency procedures and provides appropriate support.
· Focuses on process improvement by participating in inpatient service and safety process reviews.
Administrative Duties:
· Participates as a member of the team to promote a positive working environment and provides backup support when requested or necessary.
· Provides new employee orientations, training courses, and guides new team members on patient transportation and positioning.
· Maintains and reviews inventory levels against procedures scheduled, including inventory on hand.
· Makes suggestions to management for policy and procedure enhancements by conducting research, reviewing results, and presenting recommendations in a clear message.

· Education:
o Required: Associates degree from an accredited school of nursing or a Registered Nurse (RN) Diploma.
· Experience:
o Required: Minimum of one to three years related experience in a multi-specialty PREOP/PACU, preferably in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center.
o Required: Completion of an accredited or Sutter Health OR training program.
· Licensure and Certification:
o Required: Advanced Cardiac Life Support – ACLS, Basic Life Support Certification – BLS, Registered Nurse - State Licensure – RN.
· Language Skills: Must possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Writes reports, business correspondences, and procedure manuals. Effectively responds and presents information from questions to managers, groups of managers, clients, customers, or the general public.
· Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume while applying concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
