SCHOOL DESCRIPTION


Since its founding in 1977, Marin Horizon has been providing a challenging and robust

academic program combined with character-enhancing life skills. Marin Horizon is a place of

creative, active learning built around our commitment to developing each student’s confident

voice. Marin Horizon serves about 300 students from toddler through grade eight and is located

in Mill Valley, CA.


POSITION DESCRIPTION


Marin Horizon School seeks a warm, energetic, and collaborative Lower School Physical

Education Teacher to work with students from toddler through grade five. The ideal candidate

understands the importance of movement, play, skill-building, outdoor exploration, and

sportsmanship in young children’s development and can create learning experiences that are

joyful, structured, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate.


Students participate in physical education regularly to build gross motor skills, coordination,

confidence, teamwork, resilience, and healthy habits. In addition, Marin Horizon’s physical education program is closely connected to our broader outdoor education philosophy. Students

build confidence, independence, care for the natural world, and practical outdoor skills through

age-appropriate experiences on campus and off campus.


This role requires a teacher who is flexible, relationship-centered, and able to create safe and

engaging environments for a wide range of learners. Strong communication, collaboration,

planning, and classroom management skills are essential.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


Physical Education and Movement

● Teach physical education to toddler through fifth grade students in meaningful,

developmentally appropriate ways.

● Design engaging lessons that build gross motor skills, coordination, balance, spatial

awareness, teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, and healthy habits.

● Create joyful, structured, and inclusive PE environments where all students feel safe,

capable, and engaged.

● Use research-based, innovative teaching practices to meet diverse learning needs while

maintaining clear routines, expectations, and safety protocols in indoor and outdoor PE

spaces.


Outdoor Education

● Help plan, prepare for, and participate in off-campus outdoor learning and field

experiences aligned with the school’s PE and outdoor education goals.

● Support students in developing outdoor skills, confidence, independence, teamwork, and

respect for the natural world.

● Collaborate with classroom teachers and program leaders to ensure outdoor

experiences are safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate.


Collaboration and Communication

● Build positive relationships with students and support their social-emotional growth

through movement, play, teamwork, and outdoor experiences.

● Collaborate with classroom teachers, specialists, and student support team members to

support individual student needs.

● Assess and communicate student growth through progress reporting, parent

conferences, and professional family communication as needed.

● Participate in division meetings, staff meetings, committees, professional development,

school-wide events, and occasional evening or weekend events.

● Uphold Marin Horizon’s mission and values.


QUALIFICATIONS


● Bachelor’s degree in physical education, kinesiology, education, child development,

outdoor education, environmental education, or a related field required; master’s degree

preferred.

● 3–5 years of teaching experience preferred, ideally with preschool and/or elementary-

aged children.

● Experience designing developmentally appropriate PE, movement, outdoor

education, and/or experiential learning experiences for young learners.

● Experience supporting off-campus learning, field experiences, or youth sports coaching

preferred.

● Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create safe, predictable, and

engaging routines.

● Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, with

experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles.

● Strong collaboration, communication, and planning skills.

● A growth mindset, willingness to receive feedback, and genuine joy, warmth, and

flexibility in working with young children.


Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000,

commensurate with experience. Marin Horizon School offers a comprehensive benefits
