Location/Department: Speech Therapy
PRN Speech Therapist
Job Summary:
Provides speech therapy to inpatients and outpatients. Responsible for providing patient assessments and developing treatment plans. Is responsible for hands on care as well as associated documentation. Operational tasks of the department are required as well as participation in development.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Selects appropriate evaluation tools, incorporating both formal & informal tests, as appropriate per diagnosis.
- Performs evaluation components correctly, at the appropriate level of understanding for the patient.
- Grades & interprets assessment findings to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Performs evaluation & treatment in appropriate environment, with patient safety, privacy, & comfort in mind.
- Develops & modifies treatment plan with respect to patient diagnoses & needs, with input from the patient/family as to their goals & expectations from therapy. Keeps patient educated as to the course & progress of his/her treatment.
- Demonstrates competency within inpatient, outpatient, skilled, long-term care, home, & public school settings.
- Demonstrates good time management in the provision of treatment.
- Documents in a timely manner, using appropriate terminology in the correct format.
- Maintains effective communication with referring physicians, case managers, family members & other team members for optimal patient care. Completes documentation for treatment plan updates.
- Represents the speech department in EHR record review, patient care meetings & other interdepartmental meetings & teams as requested.
- Reports adverse events as warranted.
- Participates in outside workshops & other continuous education opportunities to maintain licensure and/or other certifications.
- Demonstrates competency in annual in-service on suctioning of patients in regard to performing MBS studies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of federal/state regulations as they pertain to the delivery of speech therapy services in various patient settings.
- Demonstrates an awareness of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance & worker’s comp regulations as they pretain to the delivery of speech therapy services in various patient settings.
- Incorporates MMH & speech therapy policies & procedures in the performance of work activities.
- Actively participates in departmental programming improvements & new/specialty program development
- Develops educational materials & handouts for deparmental use & incorporates written instructions & home programming for patient/family use.
- Provides in-services to other MMH team members or to the community.
- Participates in peer review activities of the department.
- Provides appropriate clinical supervision of aides, students or volunteer & co-signs documentation as appropriate.
- Supports at least one MMH sponsored event annually.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong customer service skills
- Effectively communicates both verbal and written
- Ability to use basic office equipment
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree majoring in Speech Therapy
- Licensed as a Speech Pathologist through the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board
- 6 months experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, & use of hands
- May need to lift up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs
