After School Counselor 2026-2027

Jul 27 2026

Maret School is seeking passionate and positive role models with a strong work ethic who actively embrace lifelong learning to serve as After School Counselors.

About After School

Maret’s After School program offers a welcoming environment where children from kindergarten through eighth grade can relax and unwind. The program is a safe, comfortable, low-key option for families who are unable to pick up their children at the regular dismissal time. After School offers supervised free time along with structured activities such as playground games, arts and crafts, storytime, and board games.

Students in grades 3–8 also participate in an hour-long study hall. During this time, After School counselors provide homework assistance, helping students complete assignments, daily reading, and projects. After School also offers childcare for evening events and day-long programming that runs during non-federal holiday school closures as a service to families.

Duties Include:

  • Help maintain a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for all children.
  • Oversee students during outdoor playtime, enrichment activities, and study hall sessions in indoor and outdoor spaces for the duration of After School hours.
  • Collaborate professionally with Maret faculty and other After School Counselors to promote the general well-being of Maret students.
  • Engage with students through art activities, games, and other enrichment exercises.
  • Model self-confidence and a positive self-image to provide an environment of acceptance and support for each student.
  • Attend daily meetings before the start of After School.
  • Assist the After School Director in the accurate and timely reporting of student attendance, inventory, and incidents.
  • Provide childcare for evening events and Gap Camp on school holidays.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess The Following Qualities:

  • Experience working with children or a genuine interest in learning how to work in an after-school setting.
  • Ability to work with children in a physically active environment
  • Flexibility to work with children from kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • Ability to interact with parents, children, and co-workers in a warm, empathetic, and confident manner.
  • Ability to work consistently Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:15 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Counselors are expected to work for the entire week, but there is flexibility for those who can only commit to certain days. Candidates must be available to work on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Certifications (or the ability to obtain certifications) in CPR and First Aid, pass a pre-employment background check, and attend required training on youth development.

Requirements:

  • Education: High school or equivalent (Required)
  • Teaching Experience: 1 year (Required)

Compensation: $19.50 – $22.00 per hour

About Maret

Maret’s dynamic community and campus in the midst of Washington, DC, create a unique learning environment for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Expert teachers inspire students to think both creatively and analytically, seek out multiple perspectives, work hard, and make time for joy as they tackle our challenging curriculum and explore artistic and athletic pursuits. The school’s mission, core values, and educational philosophy ground and guide our work.

Our community strives for equity and inclusion in every aspect of school life. Maret School stands firmly behind the principle that the admission of students, the employment of faculty, the operation of programs, and the governance of the school be open to all who are qualified regardless of race, ethnicity, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, or creed. We believe that this principle is both firmly grounded in the spirit of American democracy and in keeping with the civil responsibilities of an independent school.

All adults on campus are role models for our students and are considered part of the faculty. Every Maret employee must abide by our code of conduct.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, résumé, and contact information for two references to the Director of After School Programs, Saadiha Alford, at salford@maret.org. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
