JOB TITLE: Special Services Driver

LOCATION: Santa Barbara

 

POSITION Summary:

A Special Services Driver is responsible for providing prompt and courteous removal services for annual, e-waste, bulky items, illegal dumps, and delivery of containers. Work includes exiting at each stop, picking up material, and/or delivery or pickup of containers based on daily work orders. This role will provide the opportunity to gain the experience needed to progress in your career as a commercial driver.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following

  • Performs pre- and post-operation inspection and completes the VCR (Vehicle Condition Report) book for the assigned vehicle in accordance with Company policy to ensure his/her vehicle is in compliance with the Company’s safety standards prior to operating the vehicle.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety is the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times
  • Collection of annual, e-waste, bulky items, illegal dumps, and leaving the location clean and free of debris. Perform all duties with a very high level of productivity to complete all work orders assigned.
  • Ensure all loads are secure at all times for safe transport to the designated disposal facility.
  • Offload items to the C&D Yard using a forklift and place items in their designated area in an organized manner, including submittal of proper paperwork/recordkeeping completion.
  • Load and unload containers safely through the use of a forklift.
  • Pick up and deliver trash & recycle containers to new and existing customers. 
  • Interact with customers, dispatchers, and others on a daily basis to ensure all orders are serviced in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Communicate complex issues, accidents, injuries, or property damage to the Manager immediately. 
  • Develop and maintain a professional demeanor with the general public.
  • Maintain assigned truck by keeping it clean; report mechanical or related problems utilizing the Fleet Software Program.
  • Report end-of-day hours utilizing the Fleet Software Program.
  • Complete required end-of-day paperwork, Vehicle Condition Report (VCR), and other reports, as necessary.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Two years of driving experience using a company-assigned truck.
  • Valid Class C license with a clean driving record.
  • Must have the ability to understand and complete all work orders/dispatch tickets.
  • Must have the ability to read, interpret maps easily & route work orders inthe  most efficient sequence.
  • Good customer skills to meet and exceed customer expectations in a professional and courteous manner. 
  • Perform solid waste refuse collection and disposal tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent time management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Good follow-through ability; adheres to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform a physically demanding job, including loading and unloading.
  • Ability to withstand all types of weather conditions.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Less than high school education; or one year of driving experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid California driver’s license 

 LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and write English, interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. They should also be able to speak English effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratios, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to sit; squat, kneel and/or crawl. The employee frequently must climb, reach above the shoulder level, and use fine manipulation of hands. The employee constantly must walk, stand, bend at the neck and waist, twist at the neck and waste, grasp (simple and power) and push and pull. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

We are a drug-free & alcohol-free work environment. 

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and dirty. Required to put on protective outfits such as gloves, high visibility gear, hardhat, etc.
