What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field surveyor position at Marathon Electrical Contractors, LLC?
The Field surveyor is responsible for all construction survey, layout, and line-and-grade activities on Marathon's mechanical and electrical construction projects. Using Topcon robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, and MAGNET software, you ensure that systems are installed to design specifications — accurately, efficiently, and safely
You'll serve as the critical link between engineering drawings, BIM Team and field installation crews, working alongside Superintendents and Project Managers on commercial, healthcare, industrial, and mission-critical projects across the Southeast.
Construction Layout & Survey
- Assist with and perform onsite layout for mechanical and electrical systems: line-and-grade, horizontal control, benchmarks, and equipment pads
- Set up, calibrate, and operate Topcon robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, and data collectors with MAGNET Field
- Download and process design files (DWG, RVT) into layout software; verify coordinate systems and project control points
- Establish and maintain site benchmarks and control networks throughout the project lifecycle
- Produce as-built documentation, field survey sketches, and accurate daily layout logs
Quality Control & Accuracy
- Ensure all layout adheres to project tolerances, QC requirements, and applicable codes (ASME, ANSI, local AHJ)
- Conduct pre-installation checks and post-installation surveys to verify installed work matches design intent
- Interface with clients' surveyors and owner's representatives to resolve tolerance conflicts and constructability issues
Safety & Project Coordination
- Champion a culture of safety on the jobsite — participate in daily briefings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses
- Collaborate with Superintendents, Foremen, and other trades to coordinate layout schedules and minimize conflicts
- Assist in reviewing submittals, shop drawings, and coordination drawings for layout feasibility
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2 years of field experience in mechanical, civil, or electrical construction
- Experience supporting multi-trade construction projects strongly preferred
- Strong communication and organizational skills; detail-oriented with a commitment to precision
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
Topcon Equipment Experience preferred
- Robotic total stations
- GPS/GNSS receivers
- Data collectors —Field stakeout, as-built and grade workflows
- DXF/DWG import/export, and report generation
Relevant Exposure
- Knowledge of construction drawings, P&IDs, isometric drawings, and BIM coordination models
- Familiarity with construction layout principles and field measurements
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or Navisworks for layout data extraction or ability to quickly learn another platform.
- Ability to use Egnyte for secure content sharing between the field and Enterprise.
