Job Goal(s): The primary job goal of the Teacher for the Emotionally Impaired is to plan and implement instructional and behavior management programs and procedures to address the individual educational needs of MCEC students and to provide them with the skills and behaviors necessary to return to their local school district and be successful.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelors degree in education from an accredited college or university required
Certification: Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education/emotionally impaired (SE) required
Work Experience: Previous experience working in a classroom with emotionally impaired students is preferred
Skills:
- Have the philosophy that all children can learn when provided with the appropriate instruction and that changing student behavior involves teaching them appropriate behaviors and changing our own behavior
- Ability to work collaboratively with others within a “team consensus” approach
- Working familiarity with behavior modification and direct instruction techniques
- Receptive to feedback and pursue continuous improvement of effectiveness and increase achievement of student outcomes
- Ability and willingness to individualize to meet the needs of the students
- Ability to remain objective, calm and neutral when responding to student’s inappropriate behaviors
- Ability to “actively listen” to students and relate to them in a positive, supportive and reinforcing manner
- Ability to set and maintain behavioral limits in a consistent manner
- Willingness to follow through with program behavior management procedures including time out, physical restraint, and after-school detention, which includes transporting students home
Essential Job Functions:
- Effectively participate in educational planning.
- Select and maintain appropriate instructional programs, materials and supplies for classroom.
- Demonstrate effective instructional behaviors and techniques.
- Demonstrate effective behavior management with students.
- Demonstrate effective classroom management skills.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and direction to classroom aide and other support staff involved with students.
- Effectively communicate, consult, and team with parents, staff, agencies, and others.
- Evaluate student progress and program effectiveness.
- Effectively coordinate with others to establish beneficial mainstream classes.
- Maintain contact with home regarding student progress and programming.
- Maintain written student records in classroom file, as required.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon or established time lines.
- Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the special education supervisor.
- Valid driver's license required.
