Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and experienced Specialty Pharmacy Technician to join our growing pharmacy team. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician will play a critical role in supporting patients receiving complex and high-cost specialty medications while working closely with pharmacists, prescribers, insurance companies, manufacturers, patients, and healthcare providers.
This position is responsible for helping facilitate the specialty medication process from prescription intake through benefits investigation, prior authorization, financial assistance, medication coordination, fulfillment, and ongoing patient support.
The ideal candidate understands the complexities of specialty pharmacy and has strong knowledge of insurance benefits, prior authorizations, copay assistance programs, manufacturer assistance programs, and specialty medication workflows. The candidate must be highly organized, comfortable working with multiple systems, and capable of handling sensitive patient and insurance information with professionalism and confidentiality.
Responsibilities
- Process specialty medication claims accurately and efficiently.
- Work with commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payors.
- Initiate and coordinate prior authorization requests for specialty medications.
- Gather required clinical documentation, laboratory results, chart notes, medication history, and other supporting information.
- Assist patients with enrollment into manufacturer copay assistance programs.
- Screen patients for manufacturer patient assistance programs, foundation assistance, free-drug programs, and other available financial resources.
- Identify rejected, denied, or underpaid claims and assist with resolution.
- Research claim rejection codes and determine appropriate next steps.
- Assist with billing corrections, rebilling, and claim follow-up.
- Maintain accurate documentation of billing activity.
- Work closely with billing, reimbursement, and accounts receivable teams when applicable.
- Assist in identifying recurring billing issues and opportunities to improve reimbursement.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation in pharmacy management systems and electronic health records.
- Follow all applicable federal, state, and organizational pharmacy regulations and policies.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of protected health information.
- Follow HIPAA, pharmacy compliance, quality assurance, and security procedures.
- Ensure all required documentation is obtained and appropriately maintained.

- Proven experience as pharmacy technician
- Experience with an online prescription system is a plus
- Knowledge of medication and dosage measurement
- Knowledge of pharmacy law and medical terminology

- Successful completion of a pharmacy technician program

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification.
- Active pharmacy technician registration or certification as required by applicable state regulations.
- Previous pharmacy technician experience.
- Strong understanding of pharmacy operations and prescription processing.
- Knowledge of health insurance benefits and pharmacy benefit structures.
- Strong computer and data-entry skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle protected health information.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous specialty pharmacy experience.
- Experience with prior authorizations and appeals.
- Experience performing insurance benefits investigations.
- Experience working with specialty medications and high-cost therapies.
- Experience with manufacturer copay assistance and patient assistance programs.
- Experience with Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, and commercial insurance.
- Experience with electronic prior authorization systems and payer portals.
- Experience working with pharmacy management systems, EMRs, and/or healthcare reimbursement platforms.
- Knowledge of specialty pharmacy accreditation standards and quality requirements.
- Experience working with oncology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, neurology, immunology, hematology, or other specialty therapies.

Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
