Heavy Component CNC Machining Technician (Boring Bar)

Picture this

A new job packet arrives. You review the mini process sheet, blueprint, and schematics. After presetting tools, you load the program tape/file, make edits, and verify angles with a rule, level, miter, and square. With crane certifications in hand, you rig the component using chains, slings, and a battery magnet, then bring the spindle online. Throughout the cycle, you verify dimensions with precision metrology, log documentation that stays with the part, and perform ISO-aligned spot checks. Before the next setup, you touch up a small twist drill at the grinder, operate the internal shaper for a feature, and keep the cell 5S-ready.

Your mission

• Set up and operate large CNC boring bars per drawings and process sheets.
• Load tapes/files; edit CNC programs to maintain blueprint compliance and flow.
• Interpret drawings, schematics, and dimensional data accurately.
• Preset CNC tooling; grind small twist drills as needed.
• Operate internal shapers and pedestal-mounted jib cranes.
• Use hand/power tools, grinders, precision measuring instruments, and powered hand trucks.
• Secure and maintain certifications to operate overhead cranes, jib hoists, and powered industrial forklifts.
• Conduct daily equipment checks; perform basic rigging with chains and slings for jib/overhead cranes and battery magnets.
• Inspect and mark materials; ensure proper identification of parts and materials.
• Complete all required paperwork and ensure it travels with each part.
• Execute random ISO quality inspections; sustain departmental housekeeping and 5S.
• Always work safely: wear required PPE, follow facility rules, complete safety training on time, participate actively, and raise/correct hazards.

Must-haves

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment written and hands-on skills evaluation.
• Math fluency: add, subtract, multiply, divide; decimals, fractions; read metric/standard rulers and tape measures.
• At least two years’ experience in set-up, layout, and operation of large CNC boring bars (large horizontal preferred) or equivalent machining technical training.
• Blueprint literacy; skilled with hand, power, and precision measuring tools.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. up to 100 feet.

Schedule, setting, and flexibility

• Normal shop working environment.
• Monday–Thursday 4/10 schedule.
• Willingness and ability to work any shift and overtime.
