Join Our Team as a Public Safety Communicator

Manitowoc County is looking for dedicated, calm, and service-minded individuals to join our Emergency Services team as a Public Safety Communicator at the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center (MCJDC).

As a Public Safety Communicator, you are often the first point of contact during emergencies. Your work directly impacts the safety and well-being of our community by helping connect people in need with the appropriate emergency response services.

What You'll Do

As a member of our dispatch team, you will:

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency telephone calls

  • Receive and manage radio communications

  • Dispatch law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other emergency services

  • Operate the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system

  • Access and utilize the Department of Criminal Justice Information (DCI) terminal

  • Operate the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database

  • Provide critical information and support to emergency responders

  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation

No Experience Required

Comprehensive Paid Training

Candidates hired as trainees will complete an intensive 12–16 week training program that includes:

  • Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification

  • NCIC Certification

  • Additional online certifications required for the position

All required certifications and training are provided and must be successfully completed for continued employment.

Work Schedule

The Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Communicators work rotating 8-hour shifts, including:

  • 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

  • 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.

  • 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • 7:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.

Schedules follow a rotating pattern of:

5 days on, 2 days off, 5 days on, 3 days off (5/2/5/3)

Training schedules may vary. After successful completion of training, shift assignments are based on seniority and operational needs.

Current openings are on third shift (night shift).

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Ability to type:

    • 3,396 keystrokes per hour while multitasking

    • 1,819 keystrokes per hour while listening to multiple audio sources

Applicants will complete a specialized aptitude assessment designed to identify individuals with the skills and abilities needed for 911 dispatching.

Aptitude testing, background investigation, and drug screening are required.
