Job Description

The following statements of essential functions and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities. Actual duties and responsibilities may vary depending on building assignment and other factors determined in collaboration with the supervisor and/or building principal.

The School Counselor/School Social Worker supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students through direct student services, prevention and intervention programming, collaboration with staff and families, and coordination with district and community resources.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive approach to supporting the social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs of students.
  • Provides individual and small-group counseling and behavioral support based on identified student needs.
  • Supports students in developing self-awareness, self-management, positive relationships, decision-making skills, and strategies for academic success.
  • Develops and implements social-emotional learning opportunities using evidence-based practices and in collaboration with teachers and school staff.
  • Collaborates with administration, teachers, families, district mental health professionals, and other service providers to identify and respond to student needs.
  • Serves as an active member of the MTSS process, supporting the development, implementation, and progress monitoring of Tier II and Tier III behavioral and social-emotional interventions.
  • Provides crisis intervention and response related to student safety, including suicide assessments, threat assessments, safety planning, suspected child abuse or neglect, and family emergencies in accordance with district procedures and training.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors student safety and support plans as needed.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of Section 504 plans related to student mental health, behavioral, or social-emotional needs and participates in 504 meetings.
  • Participates as a service provider in the IEP process when appropriate and consistent with the individual's professional role and qualifications, including providing required services, documenting progress, and attending IEP meetings.
  • Completes or supports Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) when appropriate and within the scope of the individual's professional qualifications.
  • Provides individual and group behavioral and social-emotional services for students receiving support through an IEP, 504 Plan, or Tier III intervention.
  • Partners with students and families regarding academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health supports that contribute to student success.
  • Develops family communication, engagement opportunities, and resources to support students and families.
  • Connects students and families with appropriate school, district, and community resources and maintains productive partnerships with outside agencies.
  • Collaborates with the district mental health team, health team, administration, teachers, and community providers to coordinate student services and supports.
  • Participates in building and district professional learning, mental health meetings, required trainings, and other collaborative opportunities.
  • Supports schoolwide prevention, wellness, belonging, restorative practices, and positive school culture initiatives.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation and protects student and family confidentiality in accordance with professional standards, district policy, and applicable law.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and responsive in stressful or crisis situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or building principal.

Experience And Training

  • Experience working with middle school-aged students.
  • Knowledge and experience with trauma-informed practices.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development and its relationship to student learning and behavior.
  • Training and experience in suicide assessment, threat assessment, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
  • Knowledge of symptoms and indicators associated with physical, emotional, and mental abuse or neglect in children.
  • Knowledge and experience with Tier II and Tier III behavioral and social-emotional interventions.
  • Knowledge of MTSS and school-based problem-solving processes.
  • Experience providing individual and group counseling or behavioral interventions.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 and special education processes as they relate to student social-emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Experience with Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with restorative practices.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with middle school students and their families.
  • Strong collaboration, organization, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, educators, administrators, and community partners.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work primarily takes place in a school setting, with occasional off-site meetings, trainings, or events.
  • Position requires regular interaction with students experiencing a wide range of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to student crises and other time-sensitive situations.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate school events, meetings, or activities.
