What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Care Attendant position at Manistee County Humane Society?
The Manistee County Humane Society/Homeward Bound Animal Shelter is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Care Attendant to join our team. This role is responsible for providing daily care and support to the cats and dogs at the shelter, ensuring their well-being by maintaining a clean and safe environment. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting all living quarters and areas of the shelter per protocols. Daily feeding, watering, and general care of the animals in the assigned area as well as, observing and reporting changes in animal health, behavior or temperament to Animal Welfare Supervisor.
Job Functions:
- Follow shelter procedures and cleaning methods, fully complete duties of the assigned shelter area.
- Make sure all animals are clean, and do not need any attention
- Recognize and report any signs of illness to Animal Welfare Supervisor
- Recognize and report any changes to behavior to Animal Welfare Supervisor
- Daily inspection of dog kennels and cat condos (per assigned area) for proper working order of equipment. Report any needs to Head Cleaner
- Responsible for starting and keeping laundry going throughout the shift.
- Ensure laundry is complete and put away.
- Feed each animal as directed by management.
- Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
- Perform other general cleaning as needed.
- Notify Head Cleaner when there are concerns about protocols not being upheld in regarding cleaning, animal care, proper identification etc.
- Empty trash.
- Patrol exterior grounds if part of the assigned area, for trash and feces, and clean up.
- Ensure all animals are getting adequate time outside of kennels and other forms of stimulation.
- Direct volunteers in duties to assist with as needed.
- Assist with animal handling for procedures as needed.
Requirements:
- Ability to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting heavy objects or restraining animals, ability to stand/move/bend for long periods of time. Ability to lift up to 55lb.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors as needed.
This is a part-time position with 15-20 hours to be expected weekly. Typical shifts are 3-5 hours. Weekend and holiday availability required.
