POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Safety Officer supports the Safety Officer in maintaining and improving safety standards across all Maniilaq Health Services facilities, including Maniilaq Health Center, Long-Term Care, Public Health Nursing, and 10 regional clinics. Acting as the primary operational lead under the Safety Officer’s direction, this role conducts safety inspections, manages incident reporting, coordinates training programs, and supports emergency preparedness efforts. Additionally, the Deputy Safety Officer collaborates with leadership to implement safety policies and procedures, ensuring effective safety practices across the organization. The Deputy Safety Officer serves as a key point of contact for safety liaisons at remote clinics and may act as the Safety Officer’s proxy when needed, ensuring consistent and effective safety initiatives organization-wide.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conduct routine safety inspections, identify and report hazards with corrective action recommendations, and document findings for review.
2. Manage the incident reporting system, including logging, investigating minor incidents, and preparing detailed reports.
3. Assist in planning, organizing, and delivering safety training while maintaining training records and ensuring certifications are current.
4. Update and distribute emergency response plans, coordinate drills, and maintain emergency supply readiness.
5. Maintain safety documentation, compliance records, and inspection logs; prepare reports for leadership, regulatory agencies, and audit purposes, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety standards.
6. Travel to regional clinics to conduct inspections, provide training, support safety initiatives, and coordinate with local safety liaisons.
7. Act as a key point of contact for safety liaisons across facilities and provide operational support to the Safety Officer for high-priority tasks and projects.

Job Qualifications:


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent, with additional safety or technical training preferred but not required. A minimum of 3 years of work experience in safety, maintenance, healthcare, construction, or any role involving compliance, inspections, or training development is required, with prior experience in remote or rural environments highly desirable. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and multitasking abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or a willingness to learn. Certifications in CPR and First Aid are required (or must be obtained shortly after hire), and an OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification is preferred but can be provided if needed. Must be capable of working in Arctic and remote conditions, including extreme weather and limited transportation options. The role also requires frequent travel to remote clinics, sometimes via small aircraft, and the ability to perform physical inspections, including walking on uneven terrain and climbing stairs.
