What are the responsibilities and job description for the Day-to-Day Substitute School Nurse, District-Wide position at Manheim Central School District?
The Substitute Nurse Assistant provides temporary health support services to students under the direction of the Certified School Nurse. This position assists with daily clinical care, medication administration, student health monitoring, and emergency response. Substitute Nurse Assistants play an essential role in maintaining student safety and wellness when regular nursing staff are unavailable.
This substitute position is on an as-needed basis and is not guaranteed day-to-day work.
Key Responsibilities
Provide first aid, emergency care, and medication administration according to district policies and physician orders.
Support students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies.
Assist with state-mandated health screenings and maintain accurate documentation.
Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and healthcare providers regarding student health needs.
Maintain confidentiality of all medical information in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and readiness of health office equipment and supplies.
Respond to medical incidents or emergencies as part of the school’s Crisis Response Team.
Follow district protocols, professional standards, and the scope of practice for licensed nurses.
Qualifications
Current Pennsylvania license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) required.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Obtain and maintain required clearances and employment trainings.
Current CPR/AED certification required.
Prior experience in pediatric, clinical, or school nursing preferred.
Knowledge of infection control, universal precautions, and emergency procedures.
Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
Must maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a caring, student-centered approach.
Substitute at least one day a school year to remain on the substitute employment list.
Work Environment
Assignments occur in a school health office setting. Work involves regular contact with students, staff, and families and may include exposure to illness. Duties may require standing, walking, or lifting light to moderate equipment and supplies.
