The Mid-Level Appian Developer will support the ongoing development, enhancement, operations, and maintenance of a federal agency program —a mission‑critical, Appian‑based platform hosted in the Appian Government Cloud. This role works within an Agile Scrum environment to deliver new system functionality, resolve defects, and support system stability for a highly complex production Appian application.
The developer will collaborate closely with Senior Appian Developers, QA staff, Help Desk personnel, and the Government Product Owner (GPO) to ensure high‑quality, secure, and compliant deployments.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
The Mid-Level Appian Developer will support the ongoing development, enhancement, operations, and maintenance of a federal agency program —a mission‑critical, Appian‑based platform hosted in the Appian Government Cloud. This role works within an Agile Scrum environment to deliver new system functionality, resolve defects, and support system stability for a highly complex production Appian application.
The developer will collaborate closely with Senior Appian Developers, QA staff, Help Desk personnel, and the Government Product Owner (GPO) to ensure high‑quality, secure, and compliant deployments.
Appian Development & Configuration
- Design, build, and enhance Appian components including process models, records, interfaces, expression rules, integrations, and reports
- Implement user stories and bug fixes across development, test, and production environments in two‑week Agile sprints
- Modify existing workflows and calculations supporting grant intake, review, payment calculations, and reporting
- Develop reusable Appian objects in alignment with established system design standards and best practices
- Participate in sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
- Provide level‑of‑effort estimates for assigned user stories
- Ensure completed work meets acceptance criteria and the Definition of Done prior to sprint demonstrations
- Support production releases and hot fixes, particularly during peak grant application period
- Troubleshoot and resolve application defects and data issues in coordination with Help Desk and senior technical staff
- Support system uptime, performance, and stability requirements (97% availability target)
- Participate in root‑cause analysis and contribute to permanent corrective actions
- Assist with monitoring Appian upgrades and regression testing
- Develop solutions in compliance with Section 508 accessibility standards and U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) principles
- Follow federal security and privacy requirements including FISMA, NIST, and ED security policies
- Support documentation updates such as technical artifacts, configuration details, and release notes
- Adhere to configuration management and change control processes
- Work closely with Senior Developers to review designs and receive technical guidance
- Document developed solutions to support knowledge transfer and onboarding
- Communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders regarding application behavior and enhancements
- 3–5 years of hands-on Appian development experience
- Experience developing medium to large-scale Appian applications with complex workflows and business rules
- Strong proficiency with:
- Appian Process Models
- Records and Data Store Entities
- Interfaces and SAIL
- Expression Rules and Integration Objects
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments
- Ability to troubleshoot functional and technical issues within production Appian systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience supporting federal government or public-sector Appian systems
- Familiarity with:
- Appian Cloud or Appian Government Cloud
- CI/CD practices for Appian deployments
- Data integrations (SFTP, APIs, or file-based exchanges)
- Working knowledge of Section 508 compliance and accessibility testing
- Experience supporting production systems during high‑volume or deadline‑driven operational periods
- Appian Developer or Senior Developer Certification (preferred, not required)
- Good understanding of SQL database language and MySQL database management system
- Ability to obtain and maintain required Department of Education credentials (PIV)
- Position is 100% remote, supporting Eastern Time business hours
