Supervises sentenced inmates in the performance of work at the Inmate Work Farm; enforces rules and regulations, prevents escapes, maintains order and discipline among inmates, and drives inmates to and from the Inmate Work Farm in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to accurately enter and/or retrieve information from various computer systems and/or programs in a timely manner.
  • Ability to take criticism and verbal abuse from inmates and their visitors without reacting in a negative manner and project an image of self-confidence and control.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency situations; to make effective decisions while in stressful situations and circumstances, and to use physical force necessary to defend oneself and others.
  • Knowledge of first aid/CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of the facility layout including location of sally port controls, fuel pump controls, control panels, secure perimeters, and emergency and safety equipment commonly used inside and outside a secure facility.
  • Skill in searching/inspecting individuals, materials, and facilities for contraband/weapons and unauthorized activities.
  • Skill in strong communication capabilities and body language techniques used to demonstrate authority and safely oversee trusty inmates.
  • Skill in the use of computers, two-way radio communications, vehicles, trailers, farm equipment, and various other equipment used to perform daily functions of position.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of various tools used to repair vehicles, fences, and farm and other equipment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hear and see at normal range or with accommodation.
  • Required to stand for long periods, walk at a moderate/fast pace, step up/down 4-5 inch street curbs and into and out of vehicles; bend/squat; possess manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Working conditions are primarily outdoors with exposure to the elements, fumes and/or outdoor particles.
  • Typically standing or walking, and uses hands and fingers to handle or feel. Required to walk, stand, reach with arms and hands, climb stairs, ladders, vehicles, or equipment; or to balance; required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently pushes, pulls, lifts and/or carries equipment, tools, supplies and other materials weighing up to 75 lbs. and occasionally pushes, pulls, lifts and/or carries equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Must also possess the hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to use hands and arms to finger, handle, grasp and feel; climb into, out of, and under vehicles; and must be able to operate the following: various types of vehicles, computers, tools, and any other equipment that is used to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to work outdoors for sustained periods of time maintaining concentrated attention to detail.
  • Visual perception and discrimination is required to observe and monitor traffic, inmates' actions, Corrections personnel's actions, and potentially dangerous conditions for the workers.
  • Maintains accountability for tools, equipment, and facility keys.
  • Conducts a variety of searches/inspections and/or pat downs of individuals, materials, and facilities for contraband, evidence, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, evidence of unauthorized activities, and infractions of rules.
  • Reports, responds to, and controls emergency situations including offender assaults, fires, riots, offender disturbances, explosions, natural disasters, escapes, hostage conditions and security violations. Response requires the use of appropriate levels of force to control disorderly, combative, volatile, or hostile offenders including the proper use of a variety of restraints.
  • Observes, documents, and reports any unusual changes in inmate behavior pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies.
  • Notifies designated persons immediately during an emergency situation emergency situation, accurately describing the situation and location pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies.
  • Instructs and guides inmates on the safe use, care and proper return of necessary equipment and tools to perform daily tasks.
  • Instructs inmates on proper procedures of farm operations.
  • Successfully completes all assignments to duties as directed specifications, within specified timeframe and budget as directed and in accordance with agency policies and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

POLICY

  • Arrives on time for work, limits breaks and lunches to the allotted time, and leaves on time. Uses leave in accordance with General Orders; communicates and cooperates with management in providing proper notice of leave; patterns and amounts of leave usage (not including legitimate, properly scheduled and approved leave and protected leave).
  • Volume of work accomplished is consistent with position requirements and produced within quality tolerance standards.
  • Works with other team members to achieve group goals by contributing ideas in group settings, accepting ideas contributed by others, operating within team rules, participating in team meetings, working with team members to improve job knowledge and skills, putting team goals over personal goals, and supporting team leaders once decisions are made.
  • Follows standard office procedures, safety policies and procedures and agency General Orders.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relations (the manner in which the employee responds emotionally and verbally) with the public, other employees, and supervisors. This policy also relates to the image the employee projects and includes cleanliness and personal grooming.
  • Operates and cares for equipment, tools, and vehicles according to prescribed standards and schedules.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • CPR/First Responder certified or obtains certification within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Valid Florida driver license required.
  • Must pass MCSO 8-hour Driver Improvement Course.
  • Florida CDL Class A driver license desired.

Salary : $39,374 - $61,027
