HOURS: Full Time, 7.5 Hours per day

Job Description

The Special Education Teacher - Adaptive Curriculum for students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Autism, and/or Multiple Disabilities creates a supportive and structured learning environment designed to meet the unique academic, behavioral, communication, and adaptive needs of learners requiring intensive and specialized instruction. This role implements district-approved curricula, collects and analyzes daily and weekly student data, and uses data-driven decision-making to evaluate and refine instructional and behavioral strategies. The teacher addresses individualized student needs through a range of evidence-based academic and behavioral supports within a safe and inclusive setting, and communicates regularly with students, families, and administrators regarding progress, expectations, and goals.

Requisite Education And Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education Adapted Curriculum, or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and school personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support in a positive and structured learning environment.
  • Serve as case manager for students with disabilities.
  • Plan and implement a balanced instructional program that includes demonstration, guided practice, and independent work.
  • Collect, analyze, and use data to develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Education Program (IEP) services.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small-group instruction to meet diverse student needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into meaningful learning experiences that maximize instructional time.
  • Guide the learning process toward achievement of IEP goals and establish clear, measurable objectives for students.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and determine educational priorities.
  • Select, administer, and interpret assessments in accordance with division practices for eligibility and IEP development.
  • Participate in eligibility meetings and contribute to the development and implementation of IEPs.
  • Collaborate with parents, administrators, specialists, social workers, and other professionals to support students’ educational, physical, and social-emotional development.
  • Develop and implement plans for communication, monitoring, and follow-up in inclusive instructional settings.
  • Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals to support student learning and behavioral needs.
  • Differentiate instruction to ensure appropriate learning opportunities for each student.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in compliance with legal requirements and School Board policies.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management and instructional delivery practices.
  • Monitor students in a variety of settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Maintain an effective system for monitoring student progress and communicate concerns to appropriate parties.
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional growth and attend meetings as required or approved by administration.
  • Comply with all applicable school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and School Board and Superintendent policies and regulations.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the School Board, Superintendent, and school administration to support the effective operation of the school system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the principal to support the efficient operation of the school.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with staff and the public through verbal and written communication.
  • Physical capability to see, read, hear, speak, handle, and operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, and related technology.
  • Position may require climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
