Position Summary
The Special Education Educational Aide assists certified special education teachers in providing instructional, behavioral, and physical support to students with disabilities in a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. The aide helps implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), reinforces academic instruction, supports student independence, and contributes to positive student outcomes.
Essential ResponsibilitiesStudent Instruction & Academic Support
- Assist teachers in implementing instructional activities aligned to each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Provide one-on-one and small-group academic support under teacher direction.
- Reinforce classroom instruction using teacher-developed lessons and materials.
- Assist students with assignments, assessments, learning technology, and instructional accommodations.
- Support students in developing organizational, communication, social, and independent learning skills.
- Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the supervising teacher.
Student Support & Behavior Management
- Foster a positive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment.
- Implement behavior intervention plans and classroom management strategies.
- Support students in developing self-regulation, social skills, and independence.
- Assist with de-escalation and crisis intervention when appropriately trained.
- Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other school activities.
Physical & Personal Care (When Applicable)
Depending on student assignments, duties may include:
- Assisting students with mobility, transfers, positioning, or adaptive equipment.
- Supporting personal hygiene, feeding, toileting, or other daily living needs while preserving student dignity and independence.
- Following medical, health, and safety plans as directed.
- Assisting with lifting or positioning students using appropriate training and equipment when required.
Classroom & Program Support
- Prepare instructional materials and classroom resources.
- Maintain accurate documentation as assigned.
- Help organize and maintain classroom equipment and learning environments.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to support student success.
QualificationsRequired
- High school diploma or GED.
- Eligible for or holds a Texas Educational Aide Certificate.
- Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning, behavioral, physical, and communication needs.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Demonstrated patience, flexibility, and a student-centered mindset.
Preferred
- Experience working with students with disabilities.
- Associate degree or college coursework in education or a related field.
- Knowledge of special education instructional strategies and behavior supports.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
- Ability to assist students with mobility and positioning as needed.
- Ability to respond appropriately in emergency or crisis situations.
- Work may involve moderate lifting and assisting students with physical needs.
