HOW MLT IS FUNDED
To support this work, Mammoth Lakes Tourism utilizes secured, restricted funding from the groundbreaking Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) including assessments from lodging, restaurants, retail, ski areas and golf courses as well as limited funding from the Town of Mammoth Lakes via a portion of Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT). These resources allow the organization to follow established industry practices and make decisions informed by objective third-party research.

Role Overview
The CEO leads Mammoth Lakes Tourism as the organization’s strategic and operational head, responsible for the success of MLT’s mission and goals as approved by the Board of Directors. The CEO sets direction for the destination, guides the team, and represents the organization throughout the community, local and regional government, with partners, and across the tourism industry.
Organizational Leadership

Strategic Direction
- Continue to build upon and expand the destination’s strategic framework to support Mammoth Lakes’s long-term health as a year-round mountain resort community.
- Ensure the MLT brand stays relevant, strong, and connected to local values.
- Increase resident and partner understanding of MLT’s work, tourism’s value, and how visitor activity supports quality of life.
- Set clear priorities, milestones, and decision-making processes that keep initiatives moving smoothly.
- Use data, research, and visitor insights to inform markets, messaging, and strategic direction.
- Define success metrics that reflect economic impact, need-period visitation, community benefit, and brand outcomes.
- Lead efforts to identify, cultivate, and secure new air service partners with the long-term goal of establishing reliable year-round air access to Mammoth Lakes.
Board Relations
- Provide clear, informed recommendations to the Board with options and clear analysis.
- Create transparent reporting tools, dashboards, and check-ins tied to the strategic plan.
- Strengthen committee structures and keep governance focused on meaningful decisions.
- Maintain strong relationships with Board leadership and Town representatives.
- Ensure compliance with California’s Brown Act and other relevant required governance standards.
Operations
- Build and maintain a high-trust, high-performance workplace culture where staff are supported, engaged, capable, and deliver strong results.
- Implement performance systems with KPIs, annual reviews, and team accountability.
- Support regional initiatives including but not limited to the Destination Stewardship Plan, crisis response efforts, and other coordinated programs to ensure clear communication and alignment among all stakeholders.
Finance
- Oversee financial stewardship, including budgeting, forecasting, revenue strategy, and responsible management of public funds.
- Protect and strengthen the TBID model by keeping communication clear, sharing ROI in a way partners can actually use, and building solid relationships with lodging, restaurant, retail, and ski area partners.
- Evaluate campaign, event, and program returns, reallocating funding to the most effective opportunities.
- Maintain strong financial controls including clean audits, and healthy reserves.
- Clearly communicate the economic impact of tourism to residents, partners, and policymakers.
- Manage monthly Profit and Loss reports and spearhead annual financial audit.
Community Stakeholder Partnerships
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, local businesses, land managers, recreation partners, nonprofits, and regional organizations.
- Engage in regular listening sessions with residents, business owners, and community groups.
- Develop regional and statewide alliances to expand reach and unlock cooperative marketing opportunities.
- Grow relationships with organizations and corporate partners whose work aligns with Mammoth Lakes’ values and visitor appeal.
- Improve resident sentiment by emphasizing transparency, stewardship, and community benefit.
Sales and Marketing Leadership
- Champion the Mammoth Lakes brand with clarity, creativity, and consistency.
- Strengthen year-round visitation and need period visitation through focused sales and marketing strategies.
- Scale digital marketing using attribution, testing, and real-time optimization.
- Attract and support signature events and experiences that deliver strong economic and brand value while maintaining a healthy balance for residents.
- Expand earned media, visitor storytelling, and influencer partnerships that highlight authentic Mammoth Lakes experiences.
Advocacy
- Serve as a clear, credible voice for the value of tourism in Mammoth Lakes.
- Educate policymakers, partners, and residents on how tourism supports community services and enhances quality of life.
- Maintain steady, proactive relationships with Town Council and community leaders as well as regional and national organizations.
- Translate complex tourism and economic data into simple, accessible insights that help guide decisions.
- Lead issues of response with calm, measured communication that keeps stakeholders aligned during challenging moments.
Essential Duties
- Ensure the annual program of work is approved, funded, and executed effectively.
- Represent Mammoth Lakes Tourism at the local, regional, and national levels as a key voice for the destination.
- Provide steady, strategic leadership during challenging situations, keeping staff and partners aligned.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships that support the destination’s brand, goals, and long-term success.
- Oversee hiring, supervision, evaluation, and retention of all employees, with focused leadership of the senior team.
- Participate in relevant committees, industry boards, and partnerships that support MLT’s strategic direction and goals.
EDUCATION
The ideal candidate will hold at least a bachelor's degree in business administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Tourism, or a related field. A minimum of ten years of experience in destination marketing and management, along with oversight of an $8-million-plus operating budget, is preferred.
COMPENSATION
Base salary is $190,000 to $220,000 and a performance based bonus up to 30 percent as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
