Breakdown

Maltz Jupiter Theatre 2026-27 Season

ORPHANS

Written by Lyle Kessler

Directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge

Rehearsals begin: October 6, 2026

Opening: October 29, 2026

Closing: November 8, 2026

Casting Note: Seeking three fearless, highly physical, emotionally open actors to create a trio that feels seasoned, dangerous, and utterly lived-in— as if the play has been in their bones for years.

SEEKING:

PHILLIP: MALE, any ethnicity, 20-30 years old, a wild child who has never ventured from his house. Forced to live in a world of illiteracy and innocence; child-like; seemingly simple-minded and withdrawn; idolizes his brother, Treat, and is positive his brother knows best...until. (An extremely physical role.)

TREAT: MALE, any ethnicity, 30-40 years old. A pick pocket and thief, violent, suppressed emotion; both caretaker and provider for his brother; makes the house almost a prison for his brother. Haunted by abandonment and surrounded by anger. Possibly bulking up to become physically intimidating.

HAROLD: MALE, any ethnicity, 50-60 years old, a commanding presence, able to handle any situation with ease. Lyle Kessler calls him “a tough motherfucker. . .but . . .love comes in all different packages.” A Chicago gangster on the run, taken hostage by the brothers, mysteriously frees himself and takes control of the situation. Recognizing the brothers for lost boys (orphans, just like himself at one time), he “adopts” and mentors them, becoming their long-lost father figure. In a strange, both menacing and moving way, the man turns the brothers’ lives upside down, with positive and tragic consequences.

AIN'T MISBEHAVIN

Music by Thomas "Fats" Waller

Conceived by Richard Maltby, Jr., Murray Horowitz

Directed and Choreographed by Ariel Reid

Rehearsals begin: November 10, 2026

Opening: December 3, 2026

Closing: December 13, 2026

Casting Note: This production celebrates the music and cultural legacy of Fats Waller and the Harlem Renaissance. We are seeking a company of performers with strong jazz sensibility, musicality, and storytelling ability. The characters are all Black/African American.

SEEKING:

ANDRE: Charismatic, stylish, and always ready for a good time. Andre thrives in the electric nightlife of Harlem, effortlessly charming everyone in the room. A natural flirt with playful swagger and a mischievous sense of humor. Has strong musicality and the ability to move fluidly between smooth crooning and comedic flair. Strong Mover. Vocal Range: Tenor (approx. G2–E6)

ARMELIA: Confident, grounded, and completely at ease with herself. Armelia speaks her mind with intelligence and warmth, delivering both heartfelt sincerity and sharp humor. She carries a natural authority and poise, with emotional depth that shines in intimate ballads. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano (approx. G3–C6)

CHARLAINE: Bright, youthful, and full of playful spirit. Charlaine brings a fresh energy to the group with her curiosity, sweetness, and lighthearted charm. She should feel buoyant and spontaneous, with strong movement skills and a voice that floats easily above tight jazz harmonies. Vocal Range: Soprano (approx. G3–G5)

KEN: Big-hearted, joyful, and larger than life. Ken fills the room with warmth, humor, and irresistible rhythm. A natural entertainer with strong comedic instincts and a deep connection to the music. Has excellent rhythmic feel and comfort leading musical moments. Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (approx. D3–C6)

NELL: Sophisticated, confident, and effortlessly commanding. Nell knows exactly who she is and owns every space she enters. Charismatic and sensual with a sharp wit and worldly intelligence. A powerhouse performer capable of delivering both playful charm and mature emotional depth. Vocal Range: Alto/Mezzo (approx. F3–F5)

WAIT UNTIL DARK

Written by Frederick Knott

Directed by Peter Flynn

Rehearsals begin: January 19, 2027

Opening: February 11, 2027

Closing: February 21, 2027

SEEKING:

MIKE TALMAN (30-50) At one time, Mike was a decent human being and still has impulses that way – unlike Roat or Carlino. He has natural empathy and compassion but has chosen the life of a small time grifter. He is rootless and alone in the world, a gambler. He has natural charm and a good-natured style. He’s easy to talk to and thinks fast on his feet.

SERGEANT CARLINO (35-50) Carlino is a small-time grifter. He is a coarse, uneducated man who isn’t bothered by a conscience. He lives from day to day just trying to survive in a world that is smarter than he. He’s not a cruel or sadistic person, but he does what he has to do in order to survive without much moral compunction. He is a fairly good con man, although he’s never the brains behind any scheme – but he has an air of authority and that makes him a natural for impersonating police officers.

HARRY ROAT (40-55) Roat is a true sociopath with a sadistic streak. Like many sociopaths, he is highly intelligent and manipulates people with ease. He is an excellent con man, although, unlike Mike and Carlino, that’s not Roat’s only game – he’s a versatile and audacious criminal and will do anything for money or a thrill. He enjoys seeing others in pain.

SUSY HENDRIX (26-30) Susy is a vivacious young woman who was blinded in a car accident a year ago. Possessed of a very strong will, she decided not long after her accident that she would not let it ruin her life. She met Sam a few months after the accident and was drawn to his refusal to see her as handicapped and she married him. She is highly intuitive and a very sensitive person.

SAM HENDRIX (30-40) Sam is a tough ex-marine and a man who has lifted himself up by his own bootstraps. He is intelligent, but not an intellectual. He’s a practical man who never wallows in sentiment and, while he has a sensitive side, he is not comfortable showing it, even to Susy. He is a photographer but not possessed of an artistic temperament.

GLORIA (12-13) Gloria is at that very awkward age between childhood and adolescence. She is a bright child and has a good heart, but her home life is fairly rough (her mother is undependable, and her father abandoned the family not long ago) and she’s terribly uncomfortable in her body. Gloria wants desperately to be seen like a young woman – but she is very much still mired in childhood.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber & Lyrics by Tim Rice

Directed by Mark Martino

Choreographed by Ian Coulter-Buford

Music Direction: Eric Alsford

Rehearsals begin: December 15, 2026

Opening: January 7, 2027

Closing: January 24, 2027

SEEKING:

Jesus of Nazareth: male presenting, late 20s-early 30s, high rock tenor (Chest voice: B2-Ab4, with an additional powerful falsetto up to rock scream G5). Blindingly charismatic, ethereal, tormented…a man with the literal weight of the world on his shoulders trying to gracefully lead his followers to greater “godly” things, while struggling mightily with his own mortal fate

Judas Iscariot: male presenting, late 20s-early 30s, rock/soul tenor with access to very high registers across a full dynamic range (E3-D4 ( )) Passionate, intense, unbending…the tragic antagonist of our story. A truth-teller who finds it impossible to be a follower without accountability. The screaming, tortured voice of reason being drowned out inside a fever driven movement. STRONG MOVER

Mary Magdalene: female presenting, late 20s-early 30s, belt mezzo with an early 70’s pop sound (G#3-C5) Serene, earthy, strong…a reformed prostitute who is Jesus’s most loyal and intimate confidante. A source of sanctuary amidst the chaos…her unwavering devotion evolves into unspoken romantic love for the man she struggles to understand fully.

Pontius Pilot and As Cast: 40s-50s. Strong Baritone range with extended high register (A2- Bb4) Conflicted, reluctant, detached….the Roman prefect of Judea haunted by prophetic dreams. Pilot is the picture of moral cowardice that succumbs to political expediency.

Caiaphas and As Cast: 30s-40s Low Bass with a baritone range (C#2-F4) Commanding, pragmatic, cold…the calculating high priest of the Sanhedrin who prioritizes institutional stability over spiritual truth. Sees Jesus as a blasphemous threat that could provoke Roman annihilation of Jewish autonomy. STRONG MOVER

Annas and As Cast: late 20s-30s High rock/soul tenor range (E3-D5) Sadistic, shrill, tightly wound…high priest raising the alarm about the dangers of Jesus shattering the comfy status quo. STRONG MOVER

ENSEMBLE: 20s-30s Highly versatile classic rock, pop, soul singer/dancers. An ensemble of ALL gender identities, ALL ethnic and racial backgrounds, ALL sizes to propel and ignite the story of Jesus’s final week. All need to be powerful singers and very good to excellent dancers.

FEATURED ROLES that will be cast from the Ensemble:

Peter: late 20s. Folk-rock baritone range (D3-G4) Impulsive, loving…Jesus’s right-hand apostle, the gentle “rock” on whom Jesus intends to build his church. We watch fear cause Peter’s bravado crumble into cowardice as lofty ideals meet painful reality.

King Herod 30’s-40’s. High baritone range (B3-G5) Scathingly “witty”, petty, acerbic… A vindictive tyrant, Herod plays to the fawning crowd of sycophants with biting humor and personal taunts that barely disguise the jealousy and steely loathing underneath.

Simon Zealotes 20’s Tenor/High Baritone range (D3-Bb4 ) Militant, fanatical, fiery …idolizes Jesus and is blindly filled with the revolutionary fervor of the cause.

NOTE: Some Ensemble members will understudy principal and featured roles -Two Ensemble Swings will stand-by for all ensemble members and possibly understudy selected principal roles
