Overview
Malikah is seeking a full-time Advocacy & Organizing Coordinator to support the expansion of grassroots organizing and coalition-building among Arabic-speaking and MENA communities across New York City. This role will focus on base-building, leadership development, and collective advocacy around community safety, Islamophobia, migrant justice, and anti-carceral approaches to safety. The Coordinator will help strengthen community-led responses to violence and discrimination while organizing Arabic-speaking communities to engage in civic life and policy advocacy.
The Coordinator will play a key role in coordinating the New York MENA Coalition, supporting citywide campaigns for equity and safety, and building long-term grassroots infrastructure among Arabic speaking and Muslim communities in New York. This is a community-facing organizing role requiring strong relationship-building skills, political awareness, cultural competency within Arabic speaking and Muslim communities, and a commitment to movement-building rooted in justice and dignity.
Key Responsibilities
Base-Building Among Arabic-Speaking Communities
Lead grassroots organizing efforts among Arabic-speaking communities across New York City, with a focus on Queens.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting outreach to community members, local businesses, mosques, and cultural institutions
- Organizing community gatherings, listening sessions, and teach-ins on safety, Islamophobia, and immigrant rights
- Supporting leadership development among grassroots community members
- Building and maintaining a strong base of engaged community participants within Malikah’s organizing work
Coalition Leadership & Movement Building
Serve as the primary coordinator for the New York MENA Coalition, a network of organizations advocating for equity, safety, and visibility for Middle Eastern and North African communities.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating coalition meetings and communications
- Supporting joint advocacy campaigns and public actions
- Strengthening collaboration among MENA-serving organizations across NYC
- Developing shared policy priorities and organizing strategies
- Representing Malikah within broader immigrant justice, civil rights, and racial justice coalitions
- Conducting Islamophobia trainings
Community Safety & Anti-Carceral Advocacy
Support organizing efforts that promote community-rooted approaches to safety that move beyond surveillance and criminalization.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting campaigns addressing Islamophobia, hate violence, and gender-based violence
- Organizing community education efforts on safety strategies, bystander intervention, and collective care
- Building relationships with community partners working on violence prevention and restorative approaches to safety
Legislative & Policy Advocacy
Support advocacy campaigns advancing equity and visibility for MENA communities.
Responsibilities include:
- Attending coalition meetings with strategic partners, testifying and attending rallies in Albany and Cityhall
- Coordinating meetings with elected officials and government agencies
- Mobilizing community members for hearings, testimonies, and lobby days
- Tracking policy developments impacting immigrant, Arabic speaking, and Muslim communities
Community Organizing & Leadership Development,
Strengthen Malikah’s grassroots organizing infrastructure.
Responsibilities include:
- Organizing membership meetings and community strategy sessions
- Supporting canvasses, outreach campaigns, and civic engagement efforts
- Training community members on advocacy, storytelling, and civic participation
- Maintaining organizing databases and tracking community engagement
Community Events & Public Engagement
Support organizing and community engagement through Malikah’s public programs and cultural gatherings, including:
- National Muslim Women’s Summit
- Community safety trainings and gatherings
Responsibilities include:
- Community outreach and mobilization
- Volunteer coordination
- Event logistics and on-site support
- Ensuring events serve as opportunities for community organizing and relationship-building
Skills & Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in advocacy, organizing, policy work, or community leadership.
- Strong understanding of MENA communities, migrant justice issues, and data equity.
- Proven experience mobilizing community members and managing events.
- Comfortable navigating NYC and NYS political landscapes; experience engaging elected officials is a plus.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and public speaking skills.
- Strong project management capability: able to coordinate multiple campaigns, events, and partners simultaneously.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, community-centered environment with rapidly shifting priorities.
- Deep alignment with Malikah’s mission of safety, healing, economic empowerment, and collective power.
- Must be fully in person at Malikah’s Astoria center.
