Position Overview
Malibu High School is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced High School Debate Coach to lead a small, competitive after-school debate program for approximately 6–10 students.
The program will focus on Reagan-style debate, helping students develop strong skills in argumentation, research, public speaking, cross-examination, and persuasive communication while preparing them to compete in tournaments.
This is an excellent opportunity for a debate coach, competitive debater, teacher, college student, or experienced debate mentor who enjoys working closely with motivated high school students.
Responsibilities
• Lead a weekly after-school debate practice for a group of 6–10 students.
• Teach the fundamentals and advanced techniques of Reagan-style debate.
• Help students develop cases, arguments, rebuttals, cross-examination strategies, and effective delivery.
• Guide students through research and preparation for competitions.
• Conduct practice debates and provide individualized feedback.
• Build students’ confidence, critical-thinking skills, and ability to communicate persuasively.
• Prepare students for two debate tournaments during the first semester and attend those tournaments with the team.
• Foster a positive, challenging, and supportive team environment.
Schedule & Time Commitment
• 3 hours per week after school at Malibu High School.
• Two debate tournaments during the first semester.
• Exact practice day/time and tournament dates to be determined.
• Hourly position; Compensation: $35–$50 per hour, plus paid time for two first-semester tournaments and reasonable tournament-related preparation.Compensation based on experience and qualifications.
Qualifications
• Experience competing in or coaching high school or collegiate debate, preferably Reagan-style debate.
• Strong knowledge of debate formats, argumentation, research, and public speaking.
• Ability to work effectively with high school students.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• A passion for helping students become confident, articulate, and thoughtful competitors.
• Teaching or coaching experience is preferred but not required for candidates with significant competitive debate experience.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal coach is someone who can combine competitive debate experience with strong mentorship skills. We are looking for a coach who can challenge students to compete at a high level while making debate engaging, encouraging, and accessible to students with varying levels of experience.
