DEFINITION
Under the general direction and supervision, the Parks Maintenance Assistant assists and participates in activities related to the maintenance and repair of parks and recreational facilities managed by the City of Malibu Community Services Department. The position is an entry-level position that assists with the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City parks and recreational facilities. The City of Malibu is committed to providing community services in a professional manner with a strong emphasis in sensitive and positive interaction with the public. The Parks Maintenance Assistant is expected to provide services in such a manner.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will understand and apply general maintenance principles and practices of operating specialized equipment, landscape management, and related facility maintenance safely and skillfully. Must prioritize, organize, and multi-task assignments using initiative, common sense, and independent judgment within established policies. The Parks Maintenance Assistant must handle chemical hazards in compliance with the US Department of Labor Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate attention to detail and provide exceptional customer service to the public and City staff. Must be able to work on evenings, at weekends, and on holidays.
- Performs a variety of maintenance work related to public parks and recreational facilities, SMMUSD facilities and other City landscaped areas or City event locations.
- Conducts facility inspections confirming safe and usable facilities.
- Removes invasive plant species by hand and/or mechanical methods as directed by the Parks Supervisor; if required, identifies native plants to encourage growth.
- Removes litter from public parks, recreational facilities, SMMUSD facilities and other City landscaped areas or City event locations.
- Enforces Departmental rules and regulations that govern facilities.
- Performs proper equipment maintenance.
- Ensures the appropriate image of the City is being represented.
- Performs cleaning and stocking of supplies.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Parks Supervisor and Parks Maintenance Worker.
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Experience
Minimum of one year of responsible prior experience in the maintenance and repair of landscaping, parks or other facilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Standard First Aid upon hire. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record. Other certifications may be required depending on maintenance assignment.KNOWLEDGE OF:
• General maintenance principles and practices.
• Proper and safe use of tools and materials for park maintenance including hand tools, power tools and power equipment.
