Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Interim Legal Talent group has an immediate need for an Interim University Counsel.
Overview: Our client is seeking an Interim University Counsel to advise on student and faculty employment matters, as well as draft and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts.
Company: Public University.
Experience: 7 years of commercial contracts and employment experience within higher education.
Location: Orlando, FL
Responsibilities Include:
Employment & Labor Matters
- Advise on a broad range of faculty and staff employment issues, including hiring, discipline, performance management, and terminations
- Counsel on ADA, FMLA, wage and hour, and anti-discrimination compliance
- Conduct or support internal investigations and employment-related disputes
- Draft and update employment policies, handbooks, and institutional procedures
- Partner with HR and leadership on risk mitigation and workplace best practices
Commercial Contracts
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including vendor, technology, research, and partnership agreements
- Advise stakeholders on risk allocation, indemnity, and liability provisions
- Support contracting related to procurement, academic partnerships, and institutional operations
- Develop and refine contract templates, processes, and playbooks
Regulatory & Institutional Support
- Provide guidance on higher education laws and regulations (e.g., FERPA, accreditation, governance)
- Advise leadership and business units on legal and compliance risks
- Collaborate on institution-wide compliance and policy initiatives
Qualifications Include:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admitted to the Florida Bar.
- Minimum 7 years of higher education experience highly preferred.
- Experience in employment and commercial law within a corporate legal department or law-firm required.
