What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager, Competition & Player Relations position at Major League Soccer?
Overview
The Manager, Competition and Player Relations will assist in administering tasks and implementing projects associated with the Competition and Player Relations Departments. The responsibilities of this role primarily include, but are not limited to, organizing, scheduling, tracking, processing and reporting related to match notices, departmental programming, officiating, discipline and Club communications, matchday rosters, among others that help the departments achieve their objectives.
Responsibilities
Competition
- Gather and aggregate match-related information from various internal and external stakeholders for the purposes of disseminating weekly disciplinary summary and match notices.
- Assist clubs in their operational launch, ensuring adherence to competition standards
- Manage all game notices across the league and in collaboration with officials/P.R.O.
- Management of the of Digital Match Rosters in coordination with league guidelines and policies.
- Support the logistical and administrative management of the Match Evaluator program.
- League liaison and primary point of contact on matchdays, including weekends.
- Assist in tracking and producing reports on officiating quality and standards.
- Assist in producing materials for presentations to various committees, Clubs and league personnel.
- Liaise with Clubs and internal stakeholders to coordinate various meetings, conference calls, and other periodic engagements.
- Provide supportive material to various Competition Department personnel when required.
- Provide support for marquee events such as MLSNP Cup, Goalie Wars at MLS All-Star Game, international competitions
- Support the buildout of the regular season and playoff schedules
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Player Relations
- Assist with MLS NEXT Pro player administration (e.g. player registration, player database updates, maintenance of files)
- Monitor domestic and international player registrations across MLS NEXT Pro and other domestic leagues
- Serve as point of contact with various stakeholders (e.g., MLS Clubs) regarding MLS NEXT Pro roster rules and guidelines
- Assist with match week and matchday roster submission and compliance processes
- Analyze and report on large data sets related to MLS NEXT Pro (e.g., on- and off-field data)
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, Sporting Licenses and Credentials Preferred.
- 3 years of experience

- Knowledge of the sport of soccer
- Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
- High-level of commitment to a quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Product Suites and Adobe Creative Suite
- Must be flexible and adapt to changes, when necessary.
Desired Skills
- Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency)
- Must be open to travel and working non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Total Rewards
Starting Base Salary: $80,000 – 88,500. MLS/SUM base salaries are contingent upon several factors including individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
