What are the responsibilities and job description for the Underground Percussive Driller position at Major Drilling?
We are seeking experienced Underground Percussive Drillers to join our team. This role is responsible for safely and efficiently operating percussive drilling equipment in underground mining environments. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience, a strong safety mindset, and the ability to work productively in challenging conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate underground percussive drilling equipment (top hammer, ITH) in various ground conditions
- Accurately collar and drill blast holes according to engineering plans and supervisor direction
- Perform ground support drilling, scaling awareness, and hazard identification
- Conduct pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance on drilling equipment
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues and coordinate repairs when necessary
- Handle drill steels, bits, and associated tooling safely and efficiently
- Maintain clear communication with supervisors, engineers, and crew members
- Follow all MSHA regulations, site-specific safety procedures, and company policies
- Ensure proper ventilation awareness and safe work practices in confined underground spaces
- Complete required documentation including daily reports, safety logs, and equipment checklists
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-1 years of underground percussive drilling experience
- Strong knowledge of underground mining methods and drilling technique
- Experience operating jackleg and/or mechanized percussive drills
- Ability to read and interpret drill plans and layouts
- Familiarity with ground support practices is a plus
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Strong commitment to safety and hazard recognition
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and physical
- Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in confined spaces, low light, and varying underground conditions
- Capable of lifting 50 lbs and handling heavy drilling equipment
- Comfortable working in wet, dusty, and uneven environments
- Ability to stand, kneel, climb, and work long shifts
