Staunton City Schools' Maintenance Department is seeking a Maintenance Worker/Plumber to join its team in July 2026.

The Maintenance Worker/Plumber performs multi-craft work to maintain and repair physical structures of school buildings. While the focus on this position is plumbing, this position may also specialize in one of the journeyman’s areas: carpentry, plumbing, electrical or HVAC. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations, unless otherwise indicated by the Director of Operations.

 

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school preferred; experience in the field of maintenance required. Strong plumbing background preferred.

JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker/Plumber

 

LOCATION: Maintenance

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Director of Operations/Coordinator of Maintenance

 

GRADE/RANK: 2412

 

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Maintenance Worker performs multi-craft work to maintain and repair physical structures of school buildings. While the focus on this position is plumbing, this position may specialize in one of the journeyman’s areas: carpentry, plumbing, electrical or HVAC. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations, unless otherwise indicated by the Director of Operations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

 

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains machinery, plumbing, physical structure, and electrical wiring and fixtures of school buildings in accordance with blue-prints, manuals, building codes, and safety regulations, using hand tools and carpenter's, electrician's and plumber's tools;
  • Inspects machinery and mechanical equipment for defects;
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and other plumbing equipment, and opens clogged drains, using appropriate tools;
  • Repairs or replaces electrical wiring and fixtures;
  • Constructs and repairs partitions and other wooden structures, using saws, braces, bits, and appropriate materials and tools;
  • Paints walls, floors, woodwork and fixtures, using appropriate materials and tools;
  • Replaces and repairs brick and plaster walls, using appropriate materials and tools;
  • Operates gas - or arc - welding equipment to join metal parts used to pair or fabricate equipment;
  • Monitors, regulates, and inspects HVAC equipment as directed. Helps prepare boilers and other equipment for annual inspections, maintenance activities, and/or shutdown;
  • Performs preventive maintenance to fleet vehicles (cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, trailers, generators, vans) and other equipment as needed including chainsaws, weed eaters, blowers, etc.);
  • Performs welding and cutting;
  • Performs routine grounds keeping activities (e.g., mows grass, trims trees/shrubs, etc.);
  • Maintains playground areas and equipment as directed;
  • Assists with snow removal operations as directed;
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance activities (e.g., lubricates moving parts, replaces filters, cleans equipment, adjusts/replaces belts, changes oil, prepares items for storage, etc.);
  • Adheres to proper cleaning methods, storage, and proper care of equipment and supplies;
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
  • Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the Supervisor of Maintenance immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible;
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area;
  • Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times;
  • Uses and wears safety and/or protective equipment, as appropriate;
  • Attends inservice training to develop and improve knowledge and skills of a proficient mechanic;
  • Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities and;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance in accordance with school/division policies and practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, supervisor, administrators, and school-community members. Must be skilled in the performance of one or more trades.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school preferred; experience in the field of maintenance required. Strong plumbing background preferred.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Candidate must possess good moral character. Candidate must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with the ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license within a year of employment. Candidate must be able meet the criteria to be on the SCS approved drivers’ list.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and EVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

Duties performed typically in, but not limited to the division maintenance department and in schools throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, lifting, up to approximately 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 100 pounds may be required. Work is typically performed walking or standing. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardous substances. Other working conditions include working near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock and exposure to germs and potentially blood borne pathogens.

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for diagnosing and repairing maintenance and mechanical problems; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.
