Primary Purpose:
Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel and other personnel to and from schools or other designated location. Perform daily cleanining and service of buses and vehicles. Assit with general maintenance throughout the District.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of student discipline procedure
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to operate bus
Have a safe record of vehicle driving

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules including all extracurricular activities during evenings and weekends.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled. Drive courteously and defensively.
- Departs bus garage at predetermined time and makes periodic time checks at designated points to arrive at pick-up points on schedule, and to adjust schedule for inclement weather.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and writes down the number of students delivered to school each morning and those taken home in the afternoon.
- Certifies records of out-of-town travel made by buses driven by him or her.
- Stays with bus and students in the event of bus breakdown or accident; sends word to Maintenance Director, and assumes responsibility for students until they are delivered to their home.
- Performs minor bus and general grounds maintenance and repairs as directed. May include repairing seat surfaces, replacing bulbs and lenses, oil changes, and replacing windshield wipers.
- Perform routine daily service as directed including checking tire air pressure, checking oil and other fluid levels, and cleaning bus both inside and outside. Fill tires and replace fluids as needed. Fuels buses and maintains accurate records of use.
Student Management
- Make sure that all children are safely secured in child restraint systems if appropriate.
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
- Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
- Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants.
- Keeps the principal of each campus informed regarding all important matters concerning its respective students.
- Gives special help to students with disabilities.
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Follow District established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisory of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Maintain safety certification.
