Duties
- Safely operate school buses and other transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws and company policies
- Pick up and drop off students at designated locations on time, ensuring punctuality and safety
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of the vehicle to verify mechanical soundness and report any issues promptly
- Communicate clearly with students, parents, school staff, and colleagues to coordinate routes and address concerns
- Manage student behavior on the bus using positive reinforcement techniques and behavior management skills
- Assist students with special needs or disabilities, including those requiring paratransit services or childcare support
- Maintain accurate logs of routes, mileage, student counts, and safety checks throughout each shift
Requirements
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate school bus endorsements or willingness to obtain one
- Proven experience in bus driving, commercial driving, or related transportation roles
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for diverse communities
- Ability to work with children effectively while demonstrating patience and empathy
- Mechanical knowledge to perform basic vehicle inspections and troubleshoot minor issues
- Knowledge of child safety protocols, behavior management practices, and customer service principles
- Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently; familiarity with teaching is advantageous
- Must pass background checks, Maine Department of Education Crimal History Records Check (CHRC), drug screenings, and driving record evaluations as required by law
